Getting a Lancer Evo...

First a little background my dad told me if i got a full ride to college he would buy me a Lancer Evo full knowing I've had an obsession with the car since I was 6(now 17). So I worked my *** of in school and at my job just in case, lol. SO I just got my acceptance letter to rutgers with a full ride(I've applied to other better schools but if it it what you make of the education not the name of the place you went to plus a Lancer Evo is not worth passing up). So I now have needed full ride to get Lancer Evo and a good $6000 saved up. My question i know the Evo is a great car stock but I've $6000 to burn on it. Should I burn it away or save it for college fun? Oh and if you say burn it what should I burn it on?

dude, as much as i like the idea of putting money in the EVO, save it up for college fun. Those years of your life won't be replaceable...

Have you made your final decision on college yet? b/c i'd have something to say about that too...

My buddy turned down a brand new z06 to go to Stanford, and let's just say he made the right choice.

But in all honestly, it depends on what you want to end up doing with your education. I you plan on going to graduate school, then it may not matter as much where you went to college.

First off congrats on the car always great to be able to look back someday and realize you drove one of the best cars in the world during the best times of your life. Second, if you're not dead set on being the fastest car on the road just do an EBC and a Turboback. Thats my plan, I'm on my first year of college too and I was lucky enough to get an EVO and although the car is def great there are a lot of other things to enjoy so just stick the 5k in the bank and enjoy the car.

I actually I haven't decided on college but I've got some scholarships already totalling up to 12k(in case i didn't get a full ride i was covering my *** applying for as many scholarships as possible) But here's my thing I don't want the evo to drag or any of that stuff(not saying i won't burn a couple of the kids in my town ) but I actually want to enter in a rally race at least once in my life and I think the evo would be the car to do it in of course this will be in the far future way after college. Actually my dad told me he thinks i should just get a new clutch right away since there have been many complaints with the evo stock clutch.

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with the stock clutch. I'm 18, this is my first manual transmission car and at 8300 miles my clutch is perfectly fine. Just be mindful of it when youre driving, dont slip it too much launching off the line in normal driving, let off quick when shifting toward redline, and have a decent understanding of how to drag launch the car before you do.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. While this may be partially true, the name of the school you attend usually plays a major role in getting a job after graduation and in applying to graduate studies. A person getting a 3.2 at a college such as CalTech, MIT, etc. would, in almost every case, be considered over a student getting a 3.9 from a college with a lower academic reputation.

I do realize that getting an EVO is awesome, and I congratulate you on getting a full-ride. Believe me; I would do anything short of sacrificing education and family for an EVO (And I did have a full-ride to a school, but I transfered out of it). However, I strongly suggest you think hard about your decision. An EVO lasts years, an education lasts a life time...well until you get old and start forgetting it all. Good luck.

I strongly agree. I passed up full tuition grants at a couple of well-respected schools (Vassar and Haverford) to attend a first-ranked school (Swarthmore) that only offered me a 50% scholarship. When it came to applying to med schools, and even in residency, I discovered the reputation of the school went a lot further than I expected. A couple of med schools I interviewed at told me they get literally hundreds of applicants from state schools with 3.9 and 4.0 averages, but they were very impressed with my slightly lower average from Swarthmore.

The bottom line is it would be a huge mistake to shortchange your education for a car. You'll feel pretty dumb if your Evo gets totalled or stolen and that was the main reason you went to Rutgers! Just 2 days ago someone tried to steal my Evo, for christssake. How long do you think the Evo will be around anyway? As much as we all love them, they're just cars. Don't loose your head over it.

Ok i have no doubt in what you guys are saying I haven't made my decision yet. I just got an acceptance letter from Stevens Institute of tech, and it says something calling them for information on a scholarship offer. Plus I've not just waited to get into any crappy college I've applied to all those scholarships from microsoft and whatver online and I've got 10k in those. Plus the school I really want to go to is Northeastern and I exceed they're expectations by alot they just don't start admissions until Jan 2nd. I'm definately taking education into my mind first I mean if I don't get the Evo now and go to a good college and get a good job I'll definately be ending up with and Evo and a lot more money to spend on it.

Man that is great to hear that you parents are rewarding all your hard work w/ a new car since you got a free ride in college....Just make sure you don;t take the car over the education....Make a deal w/ them that you will go to a school that doesn't give a free ride but has a better acedemic record but that you will use the 6000 you saved to help pay for school if they still get you the EVO... Not all compromises have to be bad ones...
