Just wondering..If the turbo is shot how is he still making power?

I'm just asking cause I have a green and I get a little bit of white smoke and a rough idle when I start up... No smoke when I get on it like the OP. It started happening after I did a boost leak check. Could that have broken the turbo?

How is your oil level? Have you checked it to ensure your not burning oil?
I myself thought my engine was coolant until my oil was low. And yes my plugs looked like hell.

It will make power as long as the shaft and blades are still moving freely.

Your situation requires further diagnosis. Your problem could be caused by any number of issues. I doubt the boost leak test harmed your turbo though.

ok so i checked the oil level, it was a little low, n pretty black, but i am do for an oil change, i also checked the coolant n it was green and clean no chocolate milk at all, then for the idle i tried listening for a leak n i do hear something that sounds like air being pushed out somewhere, my greddy type-s bov is constantly lettin air out is that normal? for the smoke i drove her around for a lil while and i adjusted my boost controller, i set the desired boost level to 10 and when i get on her at 10psi no smoke comes out at wot. then i raised it to 13psi, got on her then it spiked to 16 on wot and smoke came out on wot.

OK so your loosing a little oil/ burning it. First verify that the bottom of your car is clean aka your not leaking it on the ground from a bad oil pan gasket or something like that. once youve verified that, you could be loosing oil in 1 of 3 ways

1: your valves in the head could be getting old and by passing
2: your rings could be getting old with mileage and by passing
( youll see blue smoke on acceleration for rings, deceleration for valves )
3: your turbo could be starting to go, check for shaft play and see how shes doing

a little bit of oil is normal like the guy above said in the IC pipes if your Intake is still hooked up to the head, the ventilation pipe will bring some oil back into the intake and thus into the turbo if you dont have a oil catch can.

OK now for the BOV, NOOO its not normal to hear air coming out of the BOV when shes running, so thats a bad thing, so its either shot or adjust the spring down harder to see if it stops leaking ( assuming its an adjustable BOV ) if its not then get a new one. but Do a Boost leak test, if you dont know how, look it up, when you make your tester and hook it up, NO air should be coming out of your BOV

by reading your symptoms from driving, im leaning towards a bad turbo, it could be rings maybe starting to go but i doubt it. Do a compression test on your motor, and get your readings, if their in spec then your fine.

Again check your turbo for shaft play
good luck

I have the same problem you are having and I believe its a problem in my number 1 cylinder. Its reading 95PSI as compared to the other three running 125PSI. I have cams so my readings will probably be a little low, but should not differ as much as they do.

From my understanding, cylinder 1 CAN run lean when boost is turned up. I did the same thing you did and turned my MBC down and the smoke went away for the most part as well.

The compression test is very simple, I would say check for shaft play and if that is not the problem, do a compression test.

Thats very interesting as i have the same issue light smoke and rough idle, and stalling. I did a compression check all 4 were in the 140s. Turbo has no shaft play. Any other ideas me and the OP could use?

most likely the turbo. the seals can be on their way out without causing the car to lose power as long as the blades, shaft, and bearings are ok

To the op,,, Your problems may be linked to something as simple as a bad pcv valve. Don't get yourself too worried,, take the time to get the car in the hands of an EVO specialist who can quickly diagnose your bugs and get the car back to 100%. Forums are great for advice, but small problems can become big fast if they aren't addressed in a timely fashion.

Good luck with your project!!

Good luck with your project!!

A boost leak test will identify a bad PCV valve, so again the OP should
1) boost leak test and fix all leaks
2) compression test to see if all the cylinders are in spec
3) check your shaft play

Evo specialist after all these have been completed and everything checks out
( they get expensive for things that can be done by yourself with the fourms help )

I would suggest you check the crankcase ventilation valve, it gets clogged up once a while and causes some strange behavior to the car. One of the symptoms of bad CCV is rough idle and white smoke. It might be sticking open...try cleaning it with carburetor spray cleaner and a very small/light stick then put it back on
