Voltage Problem

I posted this in a different section but think it was the wrong section. Anyway I seem to be having a voltage problem. I have been taking the interior apart on the car to do some painting on some pieces and recover the seats. I started the car today and noticed after checking the volts at the battery that it reads 12.1 volts with the car running, the more things I turn on the lower the volts drop. When I turn the car off it reads 12.4 volts. This is using my hand held meter. Car has been just sitting in the garage since I am working on it, the battery is brand new. Seems kind of strange because I checked this a couple of weeks ago and it was at 14.4 volts with the car running. Not sure how to check the alternator or what else it could be. Any ideas or suggestions on what I should do? Thanks

Hey guys I figured this out today on my own, with the dash cluster out it wont read 14.4 volts. Plugged the dash cluster back in and it reads 14.4, unplug it and it drops back down in the 12's. Must have something to do with the ECU. Just wanted to post a follow up in case someone else runs into this problem.
