Summer-izing: Cooling system upgrade help
Summer-izing: Cooling system upgrade help
I'm going to be moving to a much hotter climate for the summer and want to take some preventative measures to keep my Evo happy. My DSM has been damaged from the heat - the wiring near the O2 housing is so brittle that it will crack instead of bend! Here is my current list
What do you guys think? Is there anything I should add or remove? It may seem a little excessive, but after seeing what heat did to my DSM, I'd like to make sure this car stays nice!
Thanks for the help!
The Car: 2006 black Evo IX MR: all stock except for air intake (previous owner), AEM boost gauge and wideband (waiting to be installed)
Goal: No more than 350AWHP, 100% reliability
- Aluminum radiator (mishmoto or maybe Koyo)
- Radiator cooling plate
- 80:20 water:coolant ratio with water wetter
- Exhaust wrap portion of exhaust near t-case
- Reflective Insulation on UICP (right before TB)
- Reflective Insulation on wiring near exhaust
- Maybe some heat shielding around air filter
- UV blocking window tint (I hate the 10% tint I have now, but may not get to this for a while)

The DSM has 400AWHP, but I think most of the damage occurred when it was stock. The alternator wiring harness (which is right next to the down pipe) is hard as a rock.
The main thing that bothers me is driving to work in 100+ degree temperatures, and then leaving it parked in the sun all day (it's black). The asphalt must be getting near 200 degrees by early afternoon. Also, for some reason, it makes loud creaking noises whenever I shut it off, so I guess that's beginning to make me paranoid...
It sounds like the stock cooling system is pretty good. If I always drove the car hard with the AC on high, would I have any trouble with high temperatures (under the hood or coolant)? Could I damage anything?
Is there anything else I should consider doing to help out in such high temps?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure that my Evo stays in near perfect condition unlike my POS DSM.
Thanks for all the help!
