The amount of torque applied is relative to the amount of force applied to the lever and the length of the lever. In translation, torque applied to the ground is relative to force applied to the wheel and the radius of the wheel. The larger the radius, the less torque applied to the ground. Then vice versa for braking, the larger the radius, the greater the force required to reduce momentum.

So larger wheels will give you less power to the ground and reduce braking ability. Will changing the diameter 1 inch change much? IDK, dyno results will be interesting.

I'll stick with stock sizes, it's what the car was designed to drive with. 17s for me.

Im going to assume you mean which would function better on the track?

My choice is always going to be with 18s. They look better and fill in the wells alot better, they tend to come in wider widths than 17s if you need more grip for the twistys. I guess there's pros and cons to both though. The 17s are going to be lighter, and allow you more options of tire sizes.
I'm not sure if anything more could be said... and btw the poll is slightly skewed... because of coruse 18's look better but 17's would be more "functional" from weight so.... how do you pick both in the poll?

Does anyone happen to have the weights of stock EVO wheels? That would probably help... I mean, it seems that one of the major drawbacks for an 18 is obviously weight... but I don't really think that HAS to be a drawback, it's just a function of wallet size no?

Search is your friend https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ight-list.html but this is one of the many topics that has weight of stock rims and more

17's for function as their rotations.mass is closer to the center and they can weigh less depending on the wheel quality. 18's for form as they fill the wheel well nicely. Another thing to consider though is tire selection. You have a larger tire selection in the 18" diameter vs 17" so that an offset the functionality of the 17" vs 18".

My 18x8.5 inch Volk TE37s have a larger footprint and are about 3 lbs lighter than the ones that came stock (17x8 inch BBS). I'd say they perform better than 17 inch wheels.

When you look at wheel weight, you have to consider it's affect on the motor. For example, if a 17x8 inch rim weighs 20lbs, and an 18x8 inch rim weighs 20lbs, the 18x8 inch rim will be harder to turn because more of that 20lbs overall weight is farther away from the hub.

So, in essence, an 18 inch wheel that weighs 20 lbs is heavier than a 17 inch wheel that weighs 20 lbs. You've got to factor in the weight of the tires. Some tires are heavy, and on a 4 cylinder motor, it will completely kill your low-range power. Honda kids know all about this. Just ask them how much moar fasterz their vtec became when they added their 18 inch 5Zigen wheels.

I myself am running 18 inch wheels on my evo, i think they look alot better considering this car can pull off the big rim look, but function wise i think 17s would be better if your tracking or doing some sort of racing in your car.
