Power steering pump shot?
My powersteering pump gave up about 2 weeks ago. I took it into the dealer and its being replaced under warranty.
Has anybody else had a powersteering pump fail on their car?

Wow.. Did the dealership give you any trouble about the mods? The only reason I ask is because Audi dealerships suck and they love to blame everything on your mods..
Did you have to slip anyone a 50 to get the good treatment or what?

There was one guy who was doing a lot of dry pavement donuts and cooked the pump...then he came on here and tried to say how ****ty mitsu products are and how much he hates the car.
Needless to say, he was put in his place.

they think its cool to see how much power i get out of it
i dont know why mine went out though, ive never done any donuts or anything.
ive never launched the car and dont mash it in first gear that often
i do spirited driving but i dont abuse the car.
But at least its covered under warranty, maybe its just a fluke
According to the tuners at Pruven Performance, it's a known issue...
Then again, maybe they're just trying to sell power steering coolers....

Pruven Performance Power Steering Cooler Kit. The factory power steering pump has become an issue so here is a kit that will help keep those fluid temps down and help prolong the life of the pump.

i forgot but someone said that the evo has a "performance" power steering pump. by turning the wheel all the way and locking it, it does something to the pump..i forgot that last part which is kinda crucial to this issue

Yeah turning the wheel all the way to lock and holding it there or rev while there WILL kill the pump, in any car for that matter.
I know this and i never do it because i knew it. But still...
The sound it makes is horrible

I recall the same post.. I haven't personally heard of any other failures than the one I saw online here. I think I recall hearing that it may be a known issue.
Again, this was said before, turning a pump all the way to lock can cause it to run dry under high RPM and potentially damage it.
Since you say it wasn't abused, its entirely possible the pump was very low on fluid, or leaking.. Or even just a defective bearing.. It happens..
My dealer is also very impressed with the mods on my car, and still warranty it regardless..
Just stay away from donuts and drifting and you should be fine in the future.. Hehehe..

It's a bad idea to turn any car steering wheel to lock and hold it at lock. You can hear the added pressure in the system when you do. As soon as you let it back off lock that goes away. My dad taught me that 30 years ago and it's still correct today.
Do you live in a cold climate?
My power steering pump started dying 3 days ago. I noticed that at low speeds in parking situations the steering was feeling really heavy. At first I thought I must have a flat tire or really low air pressure, but everything checked out ok in that department, well, the heaviness got progressively worse, so I assumed the power steering pump was the culprit. I've put close to 22K miles on my EVO since getting it in mid June and this is my first problem.
My dealer was great and said to bring it right in, the service manager checked it out right away and came back in about 20 minutes and asked a few questions:
"Have you had the power steering fluid changed?" No, they power steering fluid has never been changed unless your dealership has done it. I then asked why, he said the coloration and the smell of the power steering fluid was very off, he even brought in a new EVO sitting on the lot to compare.
I mentioned that my car sat for 5 days in the sub zero (-10 to -45) because I was working from home last week.
He said he hasn't noticed this problem in EVOs persay but in very cold weather he's seen other Mitsubishi cars power steering pumps, freezing, and blowing seals in such cold temperatures.
He mentioned that the EVO was Americanized in Southern California and highly doubts the engineers thought about such cold weather when selecting a power steering pump.
He offered to Emergency Rush the part in for the next day. I asked if it would ruin or wear anything excessively besides the power steering pump if I continued to drive it. He said no, it will just be as if you didn't have power steering. He asked when it would the most convient for me to come back in. I said Monday would work best, they said they would have a loaner car waiting, the part will be in, and that if I needed to drop the car off before 8 AM when they open, that just tell them what time and they will be sure to have someone there.
Pape Mitsubishi in Portland, Maine is awesome. They always treat me beyond expectations, take great care of my car and bend over backwards to work around my crazy work schedule.
So my question, for those that have had the power steering pump fail and you haven't been ragging on your car, has it happened progressively (over a long period of time) or just happened at once? And was the temperatures outside below freezing?
