time to say goodbye?

Hey guys,

I got an evo9mr, drove it for 2 weeks..not much racing most of my driving was out of boost, than the clutch blew. Replaced it with a competition clutch stage 4 and lightweight flywheel. Finally got it back, and now 4th grinds, 3rd locks out sometimes, and 6th gear feels so stiff i literally have to put all my strength to put it in gear... The car breaks up if you press the gas all the way down too..

So I'm wondering..what the hell happened? The person who had it before me must have beat the **** out of it or something because its just running terribly!

Given the circumstances.. should I say goodbye to the EVO world and trade it for a strong running fully built boosted fg2 (08 civic si coupe)?

Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated!

I'd get rid of it sad to say, cause it sounds like those "one thing after another" situations

Exactly lol I think its just bad luck.. not that this has anything to do with the engine but both the back tires blew out at the same time too! Like what are the odds haha

Hell no. Replace the transmission and learn some mechanics.. Boost leaks/issues happen on Boosted cars.. simple as that. Check your plugs check your wires, Boost leak test, Clean out your Cat if you have one, etc etc.. In my opinion trading an MR for an 08 Si is retarded in every sense.. AWD to FWD = no fun even if it is boosted. Take care of the car and get it running well. You spent too much on the clutch it seems like. Take the trans out and send it off to http://www.sheptrans.com/ they will fully rebuilt it to become bullet proof. Or take the trans out sell it with the problems listed and swap to the 8 5 speed.

You probably just need to adjust the clutch engagement. Also, the breaking up could just be a boost leak, bad plugs, maybe a retune needed... I wouldn't jump ship just yet if you like the car outside of those problems. - They're not too bad.

Me on the other hand... I had my MR transmission grenade, then hours after having a new tranny in, put a rod through my block... That's some luck :|
...Oh well I guess, building it better and better..

LOL. I threw a rod back in June. Currently in the shop for a longblock build, but now I'm worried the MR tranny is the weakpoint. I might go through the opposite. Good luck to you!

OP, all depends on what you can afford. It's not cheap to afford an Evo once you start modding.

if the clutch blew out while you were driving its not too far fetched to think that the tranny was right behind it, i bought my evo ix gsr and two weeks later my 5th gear started to grind after comming off the highway, i was just cruising. i had 22kmiles on my car and the previous owner said he wasn't hard on the car at all. i had no reason to think he was either bc everything on the car was in such good shape but crap happens.

that being said, if you had a shop change out your clutch, they probly didnt put your piping on properly. i had a hard to fix boost leak for a while but that was all it was a boost leak. LEARN about your car and how to fix it! it will save you SOOO much money in the long run. When i say learn, i MEAN take a class or read some books. Forums will get you into alot of trouble, not saying there aren't some smart people on here but an investment in an engine hoist, toolbox and proper tools will save you alot of money in the long run. If you plan on having an evo or any other high performance car its an investment you wont regret

and civics suck

I certainly wouldn't trade it in for a modded civic! Looks like you just got unlucky, I'd learn how to fix it...

Fix it. Keep it. Don't trade it in for FWD.

Yeah, I had 24k miles on my car and the owner said he never raced it, took good care of it etc. I didn't see anything major to worry about when I bought it... then shocks failed, clutch died, transmission broke one after another. When I really started taking a hard look at the wear of the car it was clear that it had been beat on pretty hard. Tein S-Techs with MR struts on PA/Jersey streets, launching the car god only knows how many times with stock clutch/6-spd transmission.

The only reason I wasn't too bent out of shape about it is I had planned on replacing most of it anyway. Evo's like other popular modded platforms are rarely unmolested. People mod and drive the crap out of them, then revert them to stock (or close) and sell them and the purchaser gets a fun surprise. Buying a 240SX/RX-7/Supra/Evo etc is a minefield of bad modifications installed poorly.

Not that I -ever- plan to sell my baby, but if I did, I have receipts from one reputable shop for everything that's been done on the car including obsessive levels of maintenance.
