I suppose it depends on what you're used to, familiar with, and have experienced as far as quality of materials. If one were to think seats from an '80s GM are high quality...then I'd say said individual would feel like the leather in SSL Evos is the ****.

I had a leather bmw 328is before, I guess the leather was thicker in the bmw, but seriously theres nothing wrong with the leather in the evo, all leather wears out and you can just get it reupholstered. Ive just had the car for like 7 years now so yea it's starting to wear. Bout the same in the bmw too though...

If you're just considering wear, you're missing the point. Also, there are different grades of leather available from BMW.

I think you are missing the point, not everyone thinks the leather is as bad as you claim it is, and you probably don't even own an ssl so I think you are just a jealous hater.

Alright, I mostly wanted to see if there was any extremely obvious drawbacks in one of the models -- it appears not

From reading up on the differences between the models, it kinda seems like this:

RS If you want a platform that can make it around a track as quickly as possible.

SSL If you want a car that your friends won't ***** about having to take a ride in. (It gives the evo some... class, I suppose)

MR If... and this is where I'm confused. The MR seems to sit somewhere in the middle. To me the MR looks the coolest with it's "sonic the hedgehog styling" (which is sadly one of the more major reasons for me wanting the car. Yes, I am a fashion ***** )

In all honesty, there are a few reasons I'm getting an evo. First, I want grin uncontrollably when I accelerate. Secondly, I love the way the way evo IX and VIII's look. Third, I do a lot of snowboarding and mountain biking so having an awd vehicle that I can comfortably take snowboarding with me is a huge plus. And fourth on the list is that it's something that I can tune on the side as a hobby and occasionally take to a track to have fun with.

This all coupled with the fact that I'm specifically looking for a rally red evo has made me decide to pick up an SSL. I have not been able to find a single rally red 2006 MR -- what gives?

Not exactly. In stock form, it will accelerate the most quickly, but it's not necessarily the quickest around the track, particularly without a wing (as some tests have shown that it won't corner as sharply). But it was meant to be that way, as a lot of guys who track Evos end up putting their own wings on anyway that may have more downforce than the stock wing (though of course they tend to look a bit crazier), plus since it's already been stripped of excess weight while being less expensive off the showroom floor, it's more ideal for the hardcore track guys who want to piece together a purpose-built track (or rally) monster out of an Evo.

The SSL really isn't all that much fancier. It's just all-leather (as opposed to partial leather) interior surfaces and a sunroof, as far as comfort goes... not significantly more enjoyable. Nothing against it though -- there are guys who really do want that stuff, and it works well for them. At the time, it was the option if you wanted factory HIDs but didn't want the MR for whatever reason, whether it was the price or the six-speed gearbox. But the SE coming out with a lower MSRP and HIDs and some other goodies was also a very attractive option.

You can get the vortex generator (the "sonic the hedgehog styling" piece you're talking about) on your own and save a lot of money over buying an MR, if that was the main thing you really liked about it. Even some Subaru guys have bought that piece and put it on their cars. If anything, I'd say the MR is actually a bit more comfortable, particularly because of its Bilsteins which make the ride a bit softer without really affecting handling, plus the six speed lowers cruising rpms.

Sounds like the Evo will be a great fit for you. It's all of those things.

I think it just may have been one of the rarer colors of the MR.

Wise choice my friend, odds are that an ssl owner cared for his car alot better than a cheaper version owner. I know I do, my car is meticulously maintained, was serviced by dealer for first 3 years, did all the tranny diff and oil changes belt, brakes, myself. my Mitsu Dealer said I went the longest on stock clutch from all the evo owners who bought it there theyve seen, The car shifts smoother than my friend's evo 9....with his mystery clutch we think is act and sloppy lookin install but the previous owner put it on so we dont know, and we noticed a freggin socket wedged into the transfer case when we further inspected it. Do look for as stock as possible, some basic bolt ons are not too bad either. But make sure the car shifts okay or you might be lookin at an expensive trans rebuild or even worse the transfer case. I'm probably going to rebuild it well after 100k, not even completely necessary but I want the real buttery new shifting synchros.

Goodluck shopping, if you get a good condition car you will love it, if you get a bad one youll hate it till its fixed. Hope to see pics of a happy new evo owner, if you take good care of the evo it will not fail to meet your expectations.

So you think that owners of the "cheaper" versions don't care for their Evos as well as SSL owners? That's a load of horse ****.

Its simply cuz they're cheaper, I had the dealer change the clutch and properly fix the transfer case seal leak at the driveshaft which was not the seal itself as commonly believed, Ive seen some silly write ups about sanding it or something, it was the spring that puts tension on the seal, cuz the seal was new done by the dealer with clutch. You guys don't always properly service your cars, I've seen enough bs on my friends 2006 evo 9 GSR that was used modified. Usually they want to sell it cuz its crapping out.

What, exactly, are you talking about, and how is it relevant to your claim?
