Jimbo hit the nail on the head. You need that little tag from our key to make a new key. Without the numbers on that tag, the dealership won't make you a new key- unless the thieves have inside contacts.

Grab a little peice of electrical tape and cover the last 6 digits. Thats what I did after I seen that same peice on the news Just a saftey precaution for me.

I recently had an extra key cut at the dealer. The parts guy needed one my keys, registration, license, and insurance card (proof of ownership). He used my key to cut the new key. I did not provide the little tag as I did not get one.

Bottom line, I don't think that the dealer can just give you a key from your vin. You might be able to get away with getting a blank but not a precut key. And you still need to program it to your ECU for the key to work.

i got my key code for my subaru over the phone giving them nothing but my first name and VIN. I was going to try several dealers but the first one handed over the info
