Unwanted attention from the presence of the wing
Lee - I also have a Rally Red EVO with the big wing. I am one of those guys who normally prefers to keep a low profile, which is certainly not possible while driving the EVO. I have never had a problem from anyone here in the Seattle area but i have only had her about three weeks. I certainly am more aware of my speed because, speaking as a former officer, cops notice vehicles that look like warrant mobiles (POS anything) and cars that look like street racers, which the big wing, red EVO certainly fits. Having said all that, I wouldn't change a thing. I think the big wing looks great, particularly in red, and like SOF said, at higher speeds it is a functional part of the car's design.
HAHAHA, dude his car is not going to take off just because he has no wing, plus the fact that he said he won't be racing it. But i too believe the wing adds a certain... ehh... SOMETHING to the car, and i don't think it'd be the same without it.

In my first couple of days on the streets, my car has gotten so many turned heads (Evos are pretty rare around here) that I almost want to scream "STOP STARING AT ME!" None of this has been malevolent -- most people giving me big grins and thumbs up. I wonder if it is the wing that makes them first notice the car, or maybe something else, like the bright red color?
When I worked on the VA/NC border, my Celica AllTrac (in black, without a wing) also got a lot of attention from the "redneck racers" (buicks without a muffler). (Can you say "turbo", Billy Bob?)
The Chesapeake cops were always going after my sliver Alfa GTV-6 (no wing) -- and one thought there was something wrong with the dash, because it had a big tach, with a tiny afterthought of a speedo.

Rumor had it, in the '80s, that VA Beach cops always went after cars with fold-down headlights.
But you can go nuts trying to second-guess the cops. Just drive in a way you wouldn't be embarassed to explain to a cop. If it's faster than the limit, then you pay extra road tax, once in a while.
I know that visibility is impaired, as a vehicle two carlengths or so behind me at night is very difficult to see as the wing totally blocks the trailing car's headlights.
I like that it blocks the trailing high beams. And you do have those big side mirrors. Besides: "The first rule of Italian driving: What's-a behind me is not important."

Perhaps this is much ado about nothing, but I have to say that I feel a bit uncomfortable with all the attention and wonder if removing the wing will mitigate that somewhat.
Heck, all red cars come factory equipped with a cop in the rear view mirror.
(75% of F-cars are red, but I got a black one. In four years, I've never even been pulled over in it.)My advice: Learn to live with the attention, or get a pickup truck. It's getting to the point where any good car is going to draw attention.

Well here is my 2cents about the big wing. I am 26 and I bought the Evo because I have loved it since Gran Turismo. When I picked up my Evo I took my parents and my sister with me to show them the car I was buying. I showed them the car with the High Spoiler and one with the Low Spoiler. The all liked the Low Spoiler, which I ended up getting anyways. Granted none of them know what an Evo is, but that just shows what regular people may think about the car.
Then I went to work and I didn't tell anyone about my car. Well I work for a Fortune 500 company so you can imagine we have over a thousand employees easily. Well a couple of guys at work saw a picture of my old 3000GT VR4 on my desk. Then they asked me if I had seen that Blue car in our garage that had a huge spoiler. I said no why? They said it must be some ricer and they thought it was immature. Well I was curious what car they were talking about.... it was an STI.
The only thing I am trying to say is that people who don't know what our car is, while just think it is a ricer with the large wing.

i get quite a bit of attention, but mostly the good kind. I think for 30 grand, i deserve a little. I still wont park it at wall mart though. But when i go to the tuner shops, they all gather. I think its cool. Hell the other day i went to Dairy Queen and heard a kid say " that F-ing old man is driving an evo...LOOK!!." Damn punk, ime only 40....****!!..... HAHAHA
Well, my friends give me crap about the surfboard I drive around with (the wing), but they also respect the car. I get a lot of looks like you said...and its rare around here. I think there is only 2 evos in my town now and I am one of them.
If anything it is suppose to be functional past 85mph...just in case you want to justify it being on there. Personally I dont mind it at all.

I've only had my blue Evo for a month but I've gotten quite a bit of attention. Ton 'o looks... three or four people rolling down their windows to talk... others zooming away when I get close (lol)
For the first few days of ownership the wing seems overly large, but after awhile you get used to it. My suggestion is to keep it for awhile then if you should choose... have it taken off.

Go ahead & ditch the wing. I am looking for a standard trunk lid so I can remove the whole assemble & keep it in the garage. I took the wing off to see what it would look like, I liked. Except for the 7 holes in the evo trunk lid.
The wing gets a lot of attention out here. Besides, itin the f-ing way of the rear view mirror sightline, right where a light rack on cop car is?!

the personality DOES rest with the wing ... and the front scoop I think ... but the wing has a total just .... aura about it that makes the Evo one of a kind .. the STi just looks like a squared plastic box to me
... I think you should keep it ... it makes the car look nicer and it just goes well with red.. hey you could always get a low profile spoiler then ... thats better than nothing on the backside.. You should take pix and see for yourself... shoot post it here and it'll be more clear and clear what ppl think ... Just imagine a blue by you evo without a spoiler ....ewww or black or silver
see what we mean?
i honeslty think that when cops see my car they instantly ad about 30 mph to the actual speed i'm doing.
and yes, i believe the wing has something to do with it.
There is no doubt in my mind that when i see a riced out civic or integra with a huge wing i think "what a punk". so how can i blame the cops for passing judgement on my big *** wing on my mitsu?
so i guess i'm pretty hypocritical huh?

If the large spoiler was part of the "heart and soul" of the evo and needed for aerodynamic reasons than mitsu wouldn't offer a low spoiler.
I think no spoiler looks good, just like low or high spoiler looks good. It's all about what you like, after all... you paid the money for teh car. who cares what other people think?
