Dear Mitsubishi, Thank You

So today me and my roommate were driving back from the store, it was probably mid 20s out and in most places the roads were completely dry in some places they were mildly moist. Anyway my roommate and I were having a conversation about just how bad your average driver is on ice. Literally my last words were, and some people just as soon as they feel them selves start to slip over react... when all of a sudden we cross a bridge. As we make it to the peak of the bridge the car in front of me touch's her brakes, starts to slip, saw the tires lock, and i dont know what she was thinking but she instantly jerked the wheel to the right, smashes the guard rail, then gets bounced to the middle of the road and slams a minivan, which then proceeds to go through the huge snow walled median halfway into the other lane. Both cars completely totaled. Me following at a good safe distance put my brakes on, quite hard, and all I do is antilock. It took probably 3 seconds to go from 45 to complete stop on shear ice, car held perfectly straight the entire way, and thats maybe a slow motion 1.5 seconds. meanwhile, the girl that was following to close behind me slides past me with the most scared s***less look on her face ive ever seen. Seriously she cleared me by 4 inches and the guard rail on her right by even less. Anyway I just wanted to say thank you mitsubishi, without even snow tires on my car (yes i am putting those on tomorrow) i still have the best performing car in a snow storm, hands down. If any of you don't drive your car because theres snow on the ground seriously you don't be afraid, these cars are amazing, which everybody already knows buy im just saying again. Also don't know if this should be in evo general or somewhere else feel free to move it.

Also I'm not a terrible person so I asked everyone was fine, I helped move their bumpers out of the road, and then I left. ANd yes both cars were completely totaled.

Nice. Oh the joys of snow and idiot drivers. Thought the story was heading south at first and your car got totaled. But title gave it away.

The evo is pretty darn good in incliment weather... with decent tires its just simply amazing..... I drove 250 miles in 2-3 inches (on the actual highway) at 70mph passing snow plows with zero problems, extremely stable.

The only issue that I see with the current Evo system is at low speed, low mu, anti-lock function is terrible. I have found its best to get out of ABS and than reapply under the threashold of ABS to stop faster (I mean sub 20mph speeds). I'm not certain if it has to do with the resolution of the WSS at low speed or just tuning.... but I should state that I design/test brakes for a living so I may also be overly sensitive to the reaction of brake functions.

The lady in front of you and behind you are the reasons i don't drive the evo on snow days....you got lucky. I would hate to deal with insurance, body shop, blah blah. I'll hit the streets later that night when no-ones out to hit me lol.

I wasn't as lucky as you. Last year some idiot in a giant van slid into my bumper and spun me on the highway and then proceeded to slam his van into the concrete median

Doesn't snow much here in Memphis but when it does the idiots come out. I've wondered how well the evo does in the snow, good to know!

I've told this story before but it fits too good here.

On the interstate, speed limit 75, I moved to the center lane to pass a slower moving truck followed by a white sedan. As I drew abreast the sedan, the driver suddenly cranked over into my lane. I did the same and was now crossing the grassy median into oncoming traffic. I straightened out no problem only to see directly ahead a raised crossover (where the cops often park). I mashed the brakes and stopped straight as an arrow just short of the crossover. My wife and I sat there in silence for a minute while it dawned on us just how amazing this all was.

Upon reentering the highway, I had pad transfer and the steering was shaking like crazy. This wore off after a few miles. The tires were Wintersports.

An Evo in CO is the way to go. I haven't had ABS in 5 years so I could go either way on that subject, wish I had an RS though. I hear ya about those crazy drivers, I try to stay behind them because I know I can stop on ice.

I have yet to drive me evo in the snow. This story made me feel a little less concerned about having to get snow tires when I go to tahoe next. Glad you didn't crash.

Damn dude, that is terrifying. Lucky though. Just put on my brand new michellin X ice tires today, ready to do some serious snow driving.

Yep I bought my beater subie for daily use just for that reason. If I want to play I take the evo out and play. In most conditions though I will drive the subie so that if it gets hit I do not care. The evo on the other hand being hit would make me very sad.
