Buying an Evo 8

Hey guys, i've been lurking here for a bit and i've finally decided to buy an evo.
im not a noob to boosted cars as i have lived in japan for about 3 years and bought some boosted cars.

I found a white one with 45k miles for a good price. i test drove it today and feels great, no leaks, no grinds, no weird noises, no vibes, everything works properly.

there are some questions that i have and i would appreciate it if you guys chime in.

The car is a 2005 evo 8 MR
pretty much stock

Mods.
air filter intake
new clutch
evo 9 mivec head
apr studs

1. The car is a 5 speed, according to the title and vehicle history report it is an MR, but i thought that MRs were 6 speed?

2. when i was shifting hard between gears i heard a "clunck" sound as if there was something loose in the trunk, guy told me it is normal on evos. is it?

Thats all for now. any suggestions will be appreciated

MR's are 6 speed, but some people have switched to 5 speed.

That mivec head is probably just a valve cover, although I could be wrong.

Did you check in the trunk to see if anything was loose?

I would check for worn bushings or anything loose, suspension, exhaust?...
Clunking in the rear is not normal, clunking under the car around the trans area on a hard down shift even with rev matching might be normal. My cars been doing that since day one so I can't really say. lol

Other than that the car sounds like a pretty good deal. pending price. GL

Hey, I have an 05 MR. It is a 6spd, all MRs are! Now when you say "The car is pretty much stock..." I disagree. The IX head on the VIII (or 8.5 as its sometimes referred) means they swapped the head for the MiVEC system, which also means they upgraded the ECU. Now if they were willing to do this, it wouldn't be unheard of for them to do a 6 to 5spd conversion, as the 5spds are tougher from the factory, and there are more options to "Beef" them up aftermarket. Usually this is done by drag racers... The "Clunk" in the rear may be a result of that, I don't know. I haven't had any clunk issues my car at all...What are they asking for it if you don't mind me asking?

when i meant stock, i meant lightly modded. it seems that it is very difficult to find a stock one with a decent amount of miles.

the guy is asking for 17500.

i thinks is a good price. what do you think?

The 'clunk' from the rear when shifting hard is pretty common actually. Google it and you will find a lot more info on it. Good luck with the car!

I know that I go the fastest when I get a "CLUNK" for each shift.

find an lancer evolution specialist in your area and bring it to him to have the car gone through before you buy. also make sure you have a full history on the car. that would be my advice.

The clunk sound is normal under hard shifting or letting off the clutch fast. AMS makes a rear mustache bar delete kit that fixes this issue. It has something to do wiith the rear diff and where it mounts.

After buying my first modded car I could not agree with this more. That's not a bad price.. however there seem to be a lot of unknowns like 5 spd swap and IX head? I would be cautious, have it checked out by someone who knows what all to look at in a used evo. The typical owners of these cars do not treat them the way they deserved to be treated.. Good luck and post some pics up if you do buy it

Ok, so i just found out that the evo 8 mr has had 6 owners and this guy doesnt seem to know much about the car and is telling me that it comes with a 5 speed from factory. SO, ive decided not to buy that one.

I also found another evo: 2006 GG evo 9 MR with 64k miles

has a good amount of mods all professionally installed and has documentation as proof.

everytime a performance mod was added it was dynoed and documented.

he has all dyno sheets. last one he dynoed at 369 AWHP

original owner and is asking for 20500.

is the price reasonable?
