How did you guys learn?
How did you guys learn?
So let me start off by saying my names Josh i'm in Reno,NV any of you guys from around here? I own a 1998 Eclipse gst right now but i've been in love with Evo's sense I was like 12, and i'm almost 19 ( i'm not trying to make this an introduction thread cause i've done one of those awhile ago). I'm surrounded by Subarus, like 5 of my buddies have Subarus and they're quick real quick, example one of my friends has a bugeye wrx at about 550whp on e85 with a 35r. Quick, to say the least in my eyes. So aside from all the darn subies I have to be around all the time the only other cars i'm affiliated with is my brother has a 240sx that were currently doing an sr20 swap into and my cousin has a mark 3 supra he's taking forever to put a 7m into.
Anyway I guess i'm just trying to meet some people on this website, and just start a topic, but my question is to you, how much did you know about evo's before you had one? Like did you know how mivec worked? or did you know what size turbo stock evo's came with or what you wanted to do with your evo when you first got it?
I'm the type of person that has to do something physically to learn it rather than read about it so I just feel like I don't know that much about evo's but i'm hungry to know everything about them and how to build em. I know it takes a lot of knowledge and skill to build a car. So did you guys mainly learn everything about your evo's through doing it once you got it? or mainly reading up on them?
I read through these forums a lot but there are just some terms that i'm like
than everyone talks about all these different turbos, and set ups, and cams, so i'm just curious, I just want to understand better you know?
I don't know just trying to chat with new people and try and find better ways to learn about evo's and know what I want to do ahead of time before I actually buy an evo which hopefully is in about a year maybe less (my dream about to finally come true
) Anyway just wanna get some input and meet some new people thanks guys!
Hopefully I dont get bashed on to hard and sorry if this is in the wrong section?

For me, My choices were RSX-S, STI, or Evo. I decided I didn't want an STI, because everyone and their mother has one. And a RSX-S, it was a honda so I didn't want to get stuck in that community. I found EvoM and I decided to go with that instead. I didn't know ANYTHING about Evo's. My car didn't come with mivec (evo8). I told the dealership I want a white evo without the wing. They found me a RS in NY. I told them to drive it down to VA and i'll buy it. The Evo was my FIRST standard. Luckily the clutch was already about to go so I was happy to learn stick on a broken clutch lol.
If you want to learn more about Evo's just look around on the forum. There is a TON of information. If you need something specific just type it in the search bar and you should find your answer. If not post up a thread and simply ask. You will usually get a straight forward answer or a link to the answer you are looking for.

Yeah it's kind of the same around me first everyone and they're mother owned a honda (including me at one point) now everyone and their mother owns a subaru and i've actually seen a couple older woman driving sti's SMH. I just wanna get one so I can start really learning about them and working on them that's when I know I will learn the most.
I miss Sparks lived there for a few years, anyway I would read read read and then work on the car. Im with you in having to actually do something to learn it but with the Evo since it is much more expensive to work on i.e. parts and maintenance than the GST. I still miss my old 98 GST but am def more satisfied with the EVO in every way.
Where'd you move to? Ya My eclipse is bone stock right now i've had to work on it a couple of times but it is super clean and drives great right now so i'm just hesitant on doing anything to it becuase I know I won't get my money back when I sell it and i'd rather buy and evo you know?
^ Yes, keep it stock if you plan on selling it. You can get an older EVO for less than $20k and start your build there.
I knew a little bit about EVO's before I got mine such as what differences there were between the years and trims and such. I didn't know too much in the modding side of it besides basic bolt ons would net you 300-330 hp depending on the setup. Beyond that, searching the forums on here is your best friend. That, and meeting and talking with other owners.

To do it right the first time you have to go by the book. Read about it first then do it. Making mistakes on your car can cost you, don't learn by making them just don it right.
Remember you cant fix something unless you know how it works so read about it first then do it.
But then again I'm a technician, it's my job to be technical about things.

I had a DSM background (couple 1G's, couple 2G's) and learned alot about the 4G63 from working on/modding those, and LOTS of research.
Evo's came over in 2003 and I was interested in the differences, so just kept doing research. When the IX's came out, I decided to bite the bullet. My Eclipse went back to stock, and got traded in.
My Evo got a few bolt on's and a tune and that was enough to keep me satisfied as I just want a fun street car.
Make sure you want an Evo for the right reasons. If you just want a car that will beat all your friends cars, it might be more cost effective to just build your Eclipse. A E316G and supporting mods will make a 2G pretty damn quick!

This forum moves pretty fast and you won't be able to learn that much about the car without reading on here. Hard to know what to read or where to read, but if you just come on to the engine/turbo/drivetrain thread a couple times a week, you'll catch on.
Anything worth learning takes time.
Doesn't take much for an Evo to be able to kill a wrx at that power level. If he is on the stock 5 speed, you can hang with him with basic mods and good fuel, stock turbo.

The powers a plus too
I knew nothing when I bought my evo in 06. I had to look up how to do an oil change on here. Along the line I've done bolt ons, cams, turbo swaps, gauges, electrical....nothing the avg back yard mechanic can't do. I've also had to bring the car to more skilled mechanincs as well. The forum has been my main source of aid...there's a lot of good info on here...and a lot of BS.
This is a fairly easy car to work on...I feel that it has been designed to be tinkered with. Not to say its not complex, but once you know ur way around it, projects that once took days take only hours. It takes time and patience...and money. There's only one way to gain experience and thats by getting ur hands dirty. You also have to know ur limitations too. Start small and work your way up, use the forum, find a good shop near you to bail you out if you need it.
