12V source only when engine is running

I am trying to get a Daytime running light kit installed and need a 12v source I can tap into, that comes on only when the engine is running, preferably somewhere close to the battery or in the fusebox. Please let me know. Thanks much.

Just turn your lights on when you start the car? Not sure about a switched 12v source motor running vs off.

that wont work. It has to be an automated DRL system. Canadian regulations.

Why not just tap the switched side of the ignition harness? Shouldn't be hard to run your wire wherever you need it. You'll have much better luck at either the ignition harness or the interior fuse panel. There's not much that goes back to the underhood fuse panel that's not hot at all times.

I could do that, but then the DRL's are gonna go ON when I put the car in acc or ignition. I want it to be turning ON only when the engine is running.

Mine are wired to turn on when the key is at "on", whether the engine is running or not. If that's acceptable for you, I can get you a pic of where it's wired.

You could go one step further and put a negative trigger on the DRL's so when you engage the starter for example it turns them off.

Here's a negative trigger diagram with a couple SPDT relays.

Yeah I know there is one fuse under the hood thats hot only when the engine is running. I was able to locate one in my Montero, so I was hoping someone knew of one in the evo.

I dont know about Evo's prior to the X from personal experience but on the X I used the cigarette lighter fuse on the fuse panel. Just added an extend-o fuse and plugged into that for a clean connection.

FYI Ignition hot will be anytime the key is in the On position whether running or not. We wire vehicles all the time for aftermarket in dash computers and data acquisition units to power on Ignition Hot rather than battery hot for obvious reasons. This is the case on every vehicle I have worked on including my X dont see why your evo would be any different.

Here are a couple pics. Previous owner is the one who did the wiring so I can't really tell you how much work it was or what exactly needed to be done.

The blue wire is the one coming from the fog lights.

on the right side of your fuse box is a set of 8 fuses. The top right one is a yellow 10 amp., tap into that one.
