Question Malfunction - MR / RS factory oil temp gauge

I'm the original owner of a non-modified Evolution IX MR. As many already know, MR/RS Evolutions came from the factory with gauges (volt, oil temp & boost).

My oil temperature gauge is malfunctioning. I've been told this is a common problem by Mitsubishi. Before my factory 5yr warranty expired, I took my Evolution MR to the dealership for repair. I was told in order to repair the problem the oil temperature sending unit requires replacement however the manufacture is out of business.

My question is, what are other owners doing to repair the factory oil temperature gauge? I do not want aftermarket gauges.

Thank you

I would guess your best bet at this point is to try to buy a used but still working sender (part out from a crashed car for instance) and install it yourself.

wow that sucks.... these things must be worth their weight in gold, they seem like they are very hard to find sometimes. My understanding is you couldn't just buy the sender either way.... normally for service parts, the OEM has to supply 10yrs worth of parts, if a maker goes out of business, they have to find a new maker to fullfil the service part quantity, or get the original maker to do the same.

I just finished installing MR/RS OEM gauges in my SE and was told before I started that the gauge and sender are calibrated together and its very important that they match. I got lucky and found the entire gauge cluster and all the parts that go with it from STM, who had pulled it out of a salvage car. When the parts arrived there was a serial number on the sender and on the gauge that matched, which further verifies that they are calibrated as a matched set. So you either need to find a salvage gauge and sender with matching serial numbers...or shell out over $400 for a whole new gauge cluster kit. Even though the gauges have been discontinued, it looks as though you can still buy the kit and that may be the only way to get it if you can't locate a used part.

Check to see if the wire is broken, mine did not work from the factory and the problem was a broken wire.

This. My sensor started to give issues a few years back and at the time only 2 places in the entire US had the gauge + sender standalone and it was $100+ bucks just for that! I ditched the setup after that and got regular gauges. Looks like that was the correct move since now you don't even have that option it seems.

I'm switching to aftermarket gauges because the Mitsubishi gauges suck. My oil temp gauge has been acting up during the 1st year of ownership. The gauges are so small, you can barely make out the readings.

I want to thank everyone who took time to post

I had no idea the gauge and the sending unit are calibrate together. Someone mentioned loose wire which made me think the problem could be on the gauge side. This morning after getting a latte, my gauge was malfunctioning. I placed my hand under the gauge cluster to feel for the wires and my oil temperate gauge stop freaking out.

Thank you for the suggestions, I plan to spend more time troubleshooting this issue when the weather warms up

I had the same problem. I took off my console, pulled out the gauge pack, unplugged it, replugged it back in, gave it a little "Eff you" smack, and put it back together.

It has worked perfectly ever since!!!! Might work for you too

Well I thought the gauge pack in my car was after market - I guess not. What is the normal reading for the oil temp? Mine is reading like 60C. Where is the sensor located?

I got rid of those stock MR gauges the moment I got my Evo IX. Those things were put in at the last second by some lowly paid technician who ran wires all over the place, didn't tie them down and had a 9 foot long wire running from the interior of the car to the side fenders, underneath the bumper and to the sensor.

I'm fine with my Defi Gauges.

I say ditch the MR gauges like most say. My MR hardly gets driven and that same sorry *** gauge stopped working also, and Mitsu didn't want to warranty it cause I have an aftermarket boost gauge in the car.
