Thoughts, help?

Well here's the deal been wanting an evo for as long as I can remember came across one and am currently gonna check it out Monday has 87k miles on it for 12,800 2003 gsr the only thing that is good but bothers me is that the engine was just rebuilt. I asked why he said due to a blown head gasket.

Here's what the ad says:

Car has 87K miles on the body but the engine was just rebuilt has a new head, titanium springs and retainers, HKS 272, new water pump, serp. belt, timing belt, starter, battery, and a fresh tune 2 weeks ago. Car has a evo 9 turbo with buschur turbo back, tial bov hard intercooler piping with the most direct route possible because the battery is relocated in the trunk large intercooler. Car put down 351 HP 386 TQ on a low reading mustang dyno for a conservative tune. Car has 1200cc injectors and buschur double walbro pumps so you can run E-85 and can make a lot more hp if you want

Also mentioned in txt the bottom end has new bearings.

Although I was excited now im feeling some what weary of this. Any thoughts ? I don't want problems esp when after this purchase I may not be able to put loads of cash into it.

Thanks

That part makes me say it might be better to look for another one. Depending on who rebuilt the motor, it can be a bit of a toss up as to whether or not you'll have trouble with it down the road. If you have a tight budget, an evo might not be best choice for you altogether; Evos are generally quite expensive to maintain.

I would want to know the extent of the rebuild, just because it has new bearings does not scare me, thats as easy as dropping the oil pan, and if it was mine and it blew a head gasket at 80k I would through bearings in it to. The engine was probably never removed from the car.

man thats a really good price if the motor was built legit.
but if all u can afford is 12.8k you will be dreading it. gas is NOT good on these cars.
forget about adding parts, the main concern is if u can afford the gas.
yes be weary about the rebuild. its hard to know. toss up here.
like butt dyno said, maybe with your budget, this evo isnt the right car for you.

I guess it came out wrong I do know these cars are expensive to maintain but what i was meaning was I don't want to shell out money to fix a car I just bought and have it be a headache maitnence gas some problems all will be budgeted I just don't want to have to repair the car and have it cost some grand after buying it right away. Hopefully that makes sense.

Don't touch it with a 10 foot pole. You don't need bearings because a hg fails. You can't even replace bearings without taking the entire engine apart. I would run away it would be the best thing you could do.

Plus there is no LOW READING md in Orlando where a stock turbo will do 351 on 93. Those are dynojet numbers on those old *** Hks cams. I would run. It's probably been on cft jacked up Dyno.

This is mis information, bearings are easy to do and while not needed for a head gasket job, it is good cheap insurance for any motor that has some miles on it.

Check out the car or have it checked out by doing a compression and more importantly a leak down test. Then if that is good make sure he has paper work for the engine work he says has been done. Also make sure it doesn't have the death wine, you can look that up on you tube. If he does not have paper work for anything I would say its a gamble, but if he does and the compression and leak down are fine I would not be to worried about the engine.

There's nothing good or cheap about replacing engine bearings. Chances are that the person installing them being qualified to Mic and measure the clearances is not likely. There is no way in hell that engine with 87,000 miles should need engine bearings. He probably spun rod bearings and just stuck in a set of replacements to pawn off to the next buyer 350 miles down the line a complete failure of the bearings again. Sounds like they've got it running long enough to sell it and then you're on your own
