Talking Bald Advans in the snow

Well wouldn't you know it. I was supposed to get my new tires installed yesterday and it ended up not happening. As luck would have it I woke up to about 4" of fresh snow this morning. I was like damn, this is going to be an interesting ride to work.

I got the car warmed up and cleaned off then set-off on my way. I was expecting the worse with all the bad press I'd been hearing about the Advans snow performance. However I was pleasently surprised at how well the car did considering my front tires are effectivly slicks. Don't get me wrong, the tires are horrible, but with proper driving technique they can get you by in a pinch. On the highway driving part of my route I was cruising pretty well. The snow was packed down and solid and if you kept a solid, even throttle no problems at all. You just had to be carefull of quik lane changs or sudden steering input. Also, you gotta be very mindfull of stopping distance. I hardly used the brakes at all. I would just downshift and slowly roll to a stop when need be. When I got to the curvy two-lane part of my route its was a little different. They roads had not been plowed and there were a few inches of powder on the road. Again I was surprised that the car would even cut through it like it did. As for the curves, what I would do is cut in really sharp and steer with the rear end by modulating the throttle. It was a blast to say the least.

FWIW, I've been driving in the snow all my life. Learning to drive on the back roads of WV. This is more of a testament of the AWD system and the cars handling in bad conditions than anything. So if you go out on your stock tires be very cautious and know your limitations.

Jason

i run the stock tires in the snow too. they are pretty bad but drivable if you drive slow, leave more space when you break, and being careful taking turns.

Can someone help me out posting pics. Is there anyway to do it without having to have someone host them? Can I do it from a shared folder in Win. XP or something?

Driving in the snow with the advans is SUICIDE.

Seriously..

If the snow don't get you, the cold temp will..(rubber turns to a Flinstone wheel)

And what happens if someone pulls out in front of you? Or cuts you off? (as they inadvertenly do to us "good" drivers)

You have no control on those tires no matter how good of a driver you are..Post now about how you can "make " it through the winter..

Then post in a week or month or so of how some "lamebrain" cut you of in the bad weather and you toasted your EVO..(cuz you couldn't STOP)

I know, my .02 but just worried about all those guys that think they can handle the advans through the winter..

Thanks for the lecture. I appreciate the concern.

Like I said in my original post. I have winter tires waiting to be mounted. I know the Advans suck in they snow.I was simply stating, that if need be they can get you through if you have some snow driving experience. Furthermore, I believe I said to watch your stopping distances and be mindfull of others not paying attention.

BTW..I totally disagree that you have absolute no control with these tires in the snow. It may be far from ideal, but there is control if your careful.

I drove to work in 3 inches this morning. Eh, it's not that bad. Slush seems to get to the Advans pretty badly as they won't clean themselves at all. On powder the stopping distance is quite high, and you have to be mindful of that. Just general getting around isn't absolutely ridiculous, I've certainly driven worse.

Yeah, and if your careful when you play with fire, you won't get burned..

Okay..whatever you say..

And it wasn't a lecture.( sorry if it came off that way)

I'm glad your getting the winter kicks on...it's obvious you know what the deal is, regardless of how capable you think you still are with the advans..otherwise you wouldn't be getting the new tread..and when a manufacturer sticks a sticker with a disclaimer on the freakin door about the winter use of the tires, do you think it's for fun? No..They don't want to be SUED by a capable driver that decides to run them through the season then plows into a bus stop full of kids because he CAN'T STOP or is REAR ENDED because he is going like THREE MILES an HOUR...

Maybe I should rephrase myself, no, it's not suicide , it's STUPID ..That better?

Whats your idea of a tire being "bad in the snow", anyhow? A 1,000 foot panic stop distance in the snow??

I bet you play BASKETBALL in DRESS shoes, right? CAPABLE but not SUICIDE..

I guess we will agree to disagree..

Glad your getting the winter tread..The car is SO much more fun to drive in the bad weather anyways..

here in philly, we do not get much snow. maybe 3 storms of 5+ inches of snowa year, flurries and dustings here and there. it only takes a couple of hours before the roads are cleared, not really necessary to have 2 sets of tires.

This is why all my more knowlegable car buddies encouraged me to go with Conti Sport Extreme..

Even in Wisconsin, the roads are fairly clear pretty quickly although..

Today is not lookin so hot..

Pretty crappy actually..
