brakes are cheaper than clutches and syncros. I go into neutral mostly. Sometimes I downshift, but I only do it when I am playing and am willing to match revs.

I go down through the box heel/toe and get some weird and unapproving looks from other road users . It's how I was taught to drive (not the heel/toe bit) and it's a habit that I can't be bothered breaking, nor do I feel the need to.

As for hurting your clutch, if you're going to roll & sit with your foot on the clutch then yes, it will hurt it.

I'm with UFO.. I was taught to just match rev's and downshift.. actually if you do it right it then I don't see how it could cause problems, just so long as you don't high rev. One little hint though with downshifting... tap the breaks every so often to let the other driver behind you know.. I've been yelled at that my break lights are out, of course then I give them a big grin and hit the breaks to show them that they do work

When I did my driving test to get my license I got marked down for putting it in neutral and coasting.

in many cities it is illegal to coast in neutral but i'm with the concealed baboon , brakes are cheap and easy to replace. why put extra stress on your trans and engine?

Geez.

Call me speedracer but I match revs and downshift every time I drive..

Like the rest above, thats how I learned..

Isn't that the way your supposed to drive??

I don't think I have ever NOT used each gear to it's fullest..

I believe its called engine braking..(and if you are just coasting and slowing down, your "matching revs" as you decelerate..

I was always told not to do it incase you had to hit the gas while you were slowing down. If you are coasting not going to go anywhere.

its not hard, just rember: brakes are for stopping, not the engine. i say that, but i downshift too. Just know what speeds the engine seems comfortable with in wich gear. like, if your gonna downshift, wait till your at a speed in wich the rpms will be at 4000 or something, just not too high.

jeez, no wonder there are so many "got a problem with my..." posts. holy hxll guys you think spinning up those gears doesn't cause ware and tear? of course if its for fun .

The only track drivers school I've been to, made it a point for drivers to use the brakes. over and over again!
I'd rather trade a brake pad than a trans. but then I'm a cheapie

Here's a simple place to start:

http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/how...2/article.html

I'm a bit surprised by this whole "do I shift into neutral and brake or do I engine brake" debate. Neither side is right. I get the feeling that people don't understand when/why heel and toe downshifts are used. Heel and toe is not an engine braking technique! You should never feel a heel and toe downshift...just hear it.

Obviously, you should use the brakes and not your engine compression to slow the car. You have far more control and stopping power with the brakes. But there's no reason to coast in neutral or with the clutch disengaged...leave the car in gear! Then heel and toe downshift if/when you lose so much speed that you need to be in a lower gear. The heel and toe lets you serially drop down each gear as your speed dictates so you're in the correct gear when you finally get back on the gas.

When done properly this is a very smooth technique. You don't feel it at all, and it certainly doesn't abuse the drivetrain if you do it right. (If you can't rev-match properly, that's obviously a different story!) But if you do it right you're only letting the synchros do their job. Everything will be cool. I've been using heel and toe on my BMW track car for well over 100K miles and never had any engine, clutch, or tranny issues in all that time.
