You can try using a piece of tube, and point it at different places to narrow it down ( like a stethoscope ). It's a old mechanics trick. You might try checking the bolts on your exhaust manifold, 02 housing, turbo..if a bolt is loose, or missing it can make you engine noisy and it doesn't take much gap. The other thing would be to do a oil change and add a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer. That stuff works pretty good for lifter tick on 4G63s. Anyway the hose thing should help you narrow it down!

oh i just did an oil change and havent drove this car yet since.. would that lucas oil stabilizer help this tick specially in cold start? its just kinda annoying when you hear it on the start up.. i'll check those bolts you've said.. btw, do u know how much ft/lbs of torque for the valve cover? cause i checked it before and bolts are like finger tight.. and i had to tight just a bit tud. thanks btw.

96 eclipse gsx 4g63 valve cover TQ is 24 inch lbs., 2003 Evo valve cover tq is 31 inch lbs. The 03 was the first year they made the valve cover out of magnesium..so I would go finger tight and see what a 1/2 turn looks like on your torque wrench and go by feel, or maybe hit up the UK Evo website.
On the oil, you can drop a quart out of the pan and add the Lucas. I had 4
DSMs before the Evo, and it did get rid of the tick noise all together. After you pour it in wait a few minutes before you crank it over..it's thick as maple syrup!

Good luck!
