2.0 vs 2.3 spool/powerband

Hey EvoMers,

I am talking in general here, but what would you say the average difference in spool/difference in the powerband between a 2.0 vs a 2.3?

Approx 500rpm?

On a BB FP green, all other things being equal, for earth shattering lowend power is it worth shelling out the extra dough for a 2.3 (vs a built 2.0) or will it barely be noticeable because the BB green already spools incredibly fast?

Thoughts?

I have been driving my Evo for around 6 years. I always had a 2.0l in the car. Last week I drove an VIII with a 2.4l and I cannot wait for my 2.3l build to be completed. I personally find the car much more enjoyable to drive around town and on the highway. (2.4L + FP Black). I would think the gain in spool would be between 350 and 500 rpms. At the end of the day it depends on what you are going to do with the car. The 2.3 is not for everyone, I know there are plenty of members who prefer the 2.0 for the drag strip. What are you going to be doing with the car?

It is currently my DD, so mainly street-douchery. In my mind, power under 6500rpm is a must. Great if it makes a ton of power at 8500rpm, but realistically I don't drive the car like that everyday.

I frequent the strip once in a blue moon.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone locally who has a 2.3L. I'd love to take a ride in one.

I guess my thought is, if the BB FP green is going to really make most of its power post-6500rpm on the 2.0L, than maybe the 2.3L is worth the extra bucks...

If you poke around a lot of the threads from us guys that have built and driven 2.4's, you will find the vast majority all say the same thing, they will never go back. I know you are speaking of a 2.3, but it can probably be lumped with the 2.4 as just "bigger motors".

I am building a 2.4 for the reasons you listed, more low end torque, faster spool, and on E85 even faster spool yet. My end goal is a car that is much more than just a 2.0l.

A 2.3/4 running E85 on a BB Green would be an absolute blast on the street.

At the end of the day, torque is what makes a car fun to drive regardless of the driving environment. I have a 2.4LR/JB FP Red set up and I love it. I have even thought about putting on a stock IX turbo for an even earlier peak torque feeling. Here is a thread for your consideration, my friend.

600rpm on average, some combos seem to work better or worse depending on cams and intake manifold.

Fuel economy is likely to be affected, but otherwise, I don't think drivebility would be an issue. More torque & faster is expected with the 2.3, I think it's a must when installing anything larger than a FP green.
Mitsubishi had to keep the engine at 2.0L only in accordance with FIA homologation rules.

Keep in mind there are significant advantages in peak rpms, and side loading for the 2.0L motor. Yes, the 2.3L generates more torque, but at the cost of significant rpms. It's totally an issue of what you are using the motor for and what power levels you intend.

I plan on going to a 2.4 next year, I come from having a blower car to a turbo car and I will tell you, my blower car made 100 whp less then my Evo currently but it was way more "fun" to drive. Torque=fun in my opinion.

2.3/2.4 or bust!!! You'll love it if you go 2.3, and be curious what your car would be like with a 2.3 every time you get in it if you don't.

I've had a 2.3 in my car for over a year now and I won't go back. I use the car almost exclusively for autocross, occasional road course, rarely street, and never drag. I've got a ported BBK Full and it hits 30psi around 3000rpm in 3rd starting the pull at 1800. Peak torque is in the 4000-4200 range. Rev limit is 8000.
