are you sure? the cars are japanese, don't they do things the opposite way, like driving on the left side of the road, RHD vehicles, KPH, etc?

Regardless of which direction i turn it, the knob just keeps spinning.

its supposed to be fairly easy. just grab and twist counter clockwise making sure that the actual stalk doesnt twist. keep turning until its off of the threads.

Is it an OEM knob? Or one with a cheap plastic insert? If it has that plastic insert, then the insert is most likely stuck on the shifter and the knob is just spinning on it.

See if, after much spinning, you can just pull the knob straight off. If my theory is correct, you will be able to pull it off and then see the plastic insert still threaded on the shifter. Then, you hope that a pair of vice grips will get that thing off for you.

Good luck.

no silly, that's australia that everything is upsidedown / backwards!

@OP - shift knobs have a lot of threads, are you sure that it's not actually coming off just doesn't look like it?

they can be stuck on there really tight. You want to make sure your actually turning the threaded part not just the knob itself. Grab a set of large pliers if you cant loosen it by hand.

I just parted out a 99 miata with the 10 anniversary package. Its knob was a spin on, but is known for the plastic to come apart on the inside. I had to squeeze the base very hard with my hand and spin for a while before it would catch. I read about another guy using channel locks and a rag to get his off.

Some of the MR knobs came with an allen screw threaded under the sticker on top. You have to remove the shift pattern sticker, remove allen lock nut then it will come right off.

I just took my shift knob off 3 days ago for the first time.

It is really simple. However it is still a pain. My best advice. Put on a pair of gloves and and grip your hand around the widest part of the shift knob, then turn it toward you (as long as your sitting on the left side)

hope that helps
