There are tons of posts on this. I can't figure out why people say the OEM filter is best....I opened it up, it's a POS. I use the M-1104 because it's the same size as stock, plus it filters better and is thicker. I always fill up a new filter before putting it on to reduce the time that the engine doesn't have oil.
Hey fellas,

I don't have the link handy, but the Mitsu oil filter part changed as part of a consolidation. I have the old type, bought a bunch of them, and I've heard that there superior to the newer model. I wonder if those who don't like the mitsu filter are referring to the old part # or the new one? I may go hit up my dealer and pick up more of the old part # if the model really does suck.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the heads up on the OEM (Denso?) filters. I guess I'll either dig up a Baldwin source, or have a chat with Champion and pick out a Mo-1.

The one that came on my car was the one I reffered to as a POS. The good thing about it was that it was big. The bad thing was that the walls of it were thin and construction was poor. I think bigger is good because there is more filtration area, that should mean that the filter is less likely to clog and less resistance to flow.
The only benefit of a smaller filter (new part #) that I can figure is that it could handle higher pressure using the same thickness of material as a larger filter. Smaller would also be better if you didn't fill the oil filter before installing it because it would take less time for the oil to fill the filter and get to the engine.
Get a high quality OEM size fillter (like M1104), fill it up before installing it, and I think you've got the best of both worlds.
Don't take any of this as concrete, it's just what I think.

The Mitsu filter may not have the best materials or construction as Canton....but you change the puppy every 3k...and *IF* your engine goes south (or some other problem) you're not going to get hassled by using non-mitsu parts at the dealer. It's one less thing, at least for those of us that are concerned about such things, for the dealer to shake a finger at and shows you are following maintaince procedures.

Just because one person declares the OEM filter is a POS is it?

All I know is that it is a POS compared to the Mobile 1, and if there is one thing not to skimp on, it's the oil filter.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into another quality filter when I run out. I do always fill the filter before installing.

I think Mitsu just switched filters so more cars share the same filter, ie. a cost cutting/efficiency effort. I have heard that the new one is even worse (lower quality) than the original.. Oh well.

Even a Fram says that it meets OEM specs. Mitsu could never void warranty over an aftermarket filter unless you were using on that was not classified for use with your car. Stop scaring people.

For the record guys, the correct application for our Evo using the Mobil1 filters is M-108.

I use a carquest brand filter on my evo, which is made by WICKS.
I have found it to work great. Still sticking with the 10W-30 full syn. Mobil 1...Love it.
