EVO Lemon?
EVO Lemon?
My friend has had a few problems with his EVO in these areas: warped rotors, clutch, transmission, O2 sensor. I don't know all the details, but I do know he has about 15000 on the clock, and takes it to the dealer for all service. He has taken the EVO in for the brakes 3 times, then the clutch, I guess while the car was idleing you could hear a audible noise from the car, you push in the clutch and it would go away. My EVO does the same thing just not as loud, but mine has less miles too. It sounded like a bad throw out bearing, but

. My EVO is running good, and I have not noticed much difference between my EVO and another friends EVO with a HKS exhaust, cat delete pipe from RMR, Ralliart plugs and wires and race gas. I mean I drove his compared to my stock EVO and I didn't notice enough difference to justify the money he spent for the parts. Maybe on a track you can see the tenth of a second difference, but In real world driving, no notible difference to me. I think the EVO is fine right out the box. Anyway, kind of wierd to here of these problems in my friends EVO, he takes care of it too. Just feel maybee our clutch got watered down from Japan. Who Knows.

Whenever I hear a complaint about the clutch, I always sit back and kinda chuckle simply because of how my friends Evo is doing.. Granted he is only one case that I personally know of but it always makes me laugh because of how fortunate hes been.. With about 12,000miles on his clock (about 4,000miles have been with buschurs stage IV kit) he hasn't had any problems the stock clutch in his Evo... Its holding up really well but maybe thats because he doesn't beat the hell out of it.. He doesn't do any 4k dumps, nor does he drag race, but he does drive it hard every now and then.. Everytime he mentions an aftermarket clutch I always try to persuade him into running the stocker for however long she lasts..
Id love to see him set a record on the stock clutch..
As for problems, from what Ive seen on the forum the car is pretty damm solid.. I don't think Mitsu has anything to worry about.. I haven't seen any crazy problems (the clutch yes, a few tranny problems yeah, but IMO a lot of that CAN be related to abuse, not saying it always is, but in most cases Im sure thats the cause).. As for your friends car.. Those things sound like abuse issues.. Warped rotors? A fried clutch? Syncros? That just screams abuse..
If you think the above mentioned problems are bad you should do some reading on the audi TT.. We've got everything from windows that open and close by themselves to gas gauges that jump from empty to full as your driving..
yeah, crazy little buggers dem TTs...
As for warped rotors, they'll do that when you beat the hell out of them... I actually warped a brand new set of rotors on my maxima in about a month (apparently 3/4 auto-x events will do that)..
The dealership thought it was a little odd that a set of rotors would warp in less then a month (especially considering the previous set lasted me about 25,000miles) and ended up replacing them for free but it obviously wasn't weird considering the abuse that I subjected them to..

i was thinking the same thing about the clutch and its worth.. i burnt the **** out of mine the other day at the track, i gave it a week and it was back to chattering and gripping like it was brand new. All these complaints from guys who dont know the first thing about the motor, drivetrain, or brakes, shouldnt have bought the car, thats just my two cents.
Warpped rotors can be caused by the dealership using an impact wrench to bolt the wheels back on after a tire rotation. I've seen it before. Look on the inside of the wheel lug wells. Look for impact wrench scuffing along the sides of the rims down in the wells. if you see them, and he has always had the dealership rotate the tires, then he should be able to get the rotors replaced for free. The clutch, synchros....well, those might well be abuse.
do us all some good sell the car and shut the hell up. I am sick and god dam tired of everyone *****ing about this and that. for what it is worth I had a ford T-bird that had brake problems. the only problem it had was I was to hard on it. So it may be the driver and not the car.
I have 24,000 miles and same clutch same brakes. with may mods.

Stated that the noise from the clutch is normal due to the tolerance of the high performance drive tran. I guess it' normal.
