Power Steering Question

Hello all,

So recently I've been having a little issue withthe power steering. At idle sometimes it would just die out and would be difficult to turn the wheel but when I blip the throttle a little it, it comes back fine and works great.

Anyone else having this issue? If so, what is the probable cause and what is the best way to solve it? Thanks!

Are you getting any type of serpentine belt noise or slip? If not, check your fluid, make sure its full. Is the power steering pump whining? Its very possible the power steering pump is going bad and does not build enough pressure at idle.

+1 for these checks. Also when you check your fluid makes sure there's nothing in it i.e. milky white or other discolored fluid.

thanks for the input. I will definitely check when I get back. For future references, since I come from volkswagen land, what is a good reputable dealer for OEM mitshubishi parts in the event I do need to order parts from ? Thanks.

There are a lot of places that sell good OEM parts, STM, Lancershop, Fred Bean Mitsu, and a ton more. Sometimes you may even find common failure after market parts for cheaper that are made better.

What is your idle RPM when this is happening?

could be a bad pump or a restricted return line possibly. It seems like the blip of the throttle increases the pressure to allow it to flow through the restriction. What kind of condition is the fluid in?

idle doesn't change a bit once the steering wheel gets hard to turn. i was thinking perhaps there was a bubble in the line perhaps? could that be the case ?

Its unlikely that you have air trapped unless you've had the power steering apart on it. Its possible you may be bleeding pressure off of the steering rack as well. I've seen racks that go bad and cause issues like that.

yeah i see. fluids look good. belt doesn't make any noise or whine and it doesn't look to be slipping. looks like the pump might be my culprit here in this case. i really hope it isn't the rack, that looks to be a much more labor-intensive job.

The rack will be a pain, the pump is very simple. Good luck!
