Are sway bar bushings important??

I took my perrin rear sway bar to repaint it.
repainted it.
remounted the sway bar but now, the bushings that attach sway bar to the body is loose and are worn out so the sway bar moves left and right before end links are mounted.
I was wondering if this was an issue.
Is sway bar supposed to stay still on body while cornering?

thanks

The bushings are what keep the sway bar located in relation to the attachment point. The bar will move slightly left to right and up to down within the bushings. Like with any worn bushing, it will give whatever it is attached to more room for play. If there is excessive play it could shorten the life of the part.

If it is worn and there is excessive play, replace the bushing.

Yes. You need to replace those.

Any free movement of the bar in the bushings means more body roll.
