Are you serious? That's like saying Mitsubishi Dealerships won't sell used Fords. That's insane!

Many of the ones, around here, don't.

As for sanity -- I just report it.

But with all the computers in modern cars, are Mitsu dealers really equipped to diagnose a Ford?

Where you are required to warrantee a used car, I can see where holding to a specific brand may come in. Why that would be policy where no such requirement exists, ...

This isn't exactly the same as your situation but when I had my 01 suzuki gsx-r600 and wanted to trade it for a new 03 the dealer said they'd give me 3800, the bike only had 4800 miles on it, and never been laid down, not a scratch. Ended up being patient, found a buyer, sold it privatley, and got 6200! It's worth it to sell privately!

When I bought my Evo, I told them up front that they had to buy me out of the car that I had, a 97 Eclipse Spyder. I told them that I owed $8000 on it (I actually owed $3000) and they jumped on it like a hobo on a hotdog. The car was not in good shape and was on the verge of falling apart but they still gave me $8000 for it just to get the Evo sale.

Just don't back down, they'll usually take a hit to make a $30,000 sale.
very true.. i owed 20k on my BMW and it was probably worth no more than $10k in the condition it was in, CEl was on, ticking in the engine, dings, dents chunked wheels you name it, and they still gave me 14.5k for it and took a pretty big hit on the evo (hey didnt make any money on it)

just keep bugging them...there are 2 values in play when trading in, the KBB trade in value/wholesale which is the one you get online and the ACV (actual cash value) what the dealer thinks its worth

Next is they'll subtract the $5K from the the BS dealer mark-up and let's say the mark-up is $5K. $35K -$5K= $30K

What you have to do is discuss trade in and pricing on the new car as 2 seperate items.

Negotiate them at the same time as "seperate" items of importance..

The biggest mistake a consumer can make is looking at the trade difference only or only one or two parts of the car deal..

Look at EVERY part..

1. Selling price
2. Trade value
3. Trade difference.

Of course, you should double check every piece of the transaction, but those three are the basics..

I traded in a 2002 ford lightning with 19,000 miles on it to and they went nuts over it. I traded it in for 22,500 towards my Evo. Had to do a tiny bit of haggling but they do resell fords.

Well of course they would be all over it..

First of all it's a Lightning, which is more marketable for them than a standard F-Series truck...

Secondly, they will make a lot more gross profit on the Lightning when they sell it than what they made on the sale of the EVO to you..

Sometimes it's all relative to the "trade bait" you have..

As many people have mentioned here, and as you already know, it is almost always more profitable for you to sell a car yourself rather than trade it in. It all comes down to if you have the patience/time involved to sell it on your own.

When I purchased my Evo, I traded in my 02 Honda Accord EX after having a for sale sign it it for a few weeks with no real bites. Damn I wanted the Evo and I couldn't wait anymore! I did a little research about purchasing a new vehicle, trading in, etc. and how to make the transaction go MY way. Take a look at this web site http://www.carbuyingtips.com/scams.htm . Go to the bottom of the page where all of the chapters are listed. I read through all of them (yeah, it's a lot of reading, but worth it if you're serious about being "armed" when you walk into the dealer). I must say that tried to pull almost all of the scams that's listed on this website. I made sure I knew how much I still owed on my trade-in, what KBB said it was worth, how much the invoice was for the Evo, as well as the holdback on the car (most people don't know about holdback..read up on it at this website!). I had my own financing already set up, knew where I was going to get my 3rd party extended warranty after the purchase and walked in there ready to deal. The people I delt with at thought I used to sell cars because I knew so much! Needless to say, I got what I wanted for my trade in and got the Evo for the right price....and almost 4 months later my Accord is STILL sitting on their lot. I'm glad I went the route I did. All you need to do is know what's up and you'll be fine! Goodluck!!

I appreciate it. I already bought my car though. I just hard-nosed them to get the price I wanted for the trade-in.

Wouldn't they have easily found out that you really owed 3k when they called the bank to get the payoff amount??

wow..

What a trip..

Way back in 1997 I bought that domain name (url) www.carbuyingtips.com in order to start a web page to assist the car buying public..

I let the domain name lapse since I hadn't had the time to develope the page and that dude snatched it and started the website..

Oh well.

Great site ! Almost "too much" info though..

Hope that guy doesn't work for a dealership and if he does, I hope they don't pull any of those tactics..and thats how he keeps abreast of the "latest"
