ANTI-LOCK on after bumping into curb.

We had some snow fall in my area and parts of the road was dry and some parts were icy. well unfortunately as i approached a sharp turn, i caught onto ice and the rear of the car slid out and hit the curb (i was heading towards the curb at about 5mph by the time of impact). I then got out the car and checked on the wheel and as i expected, there was a good sized dent on the rim (stock evo 9 MR BBS wheels). then sat into the car and drove off. it was evident that the alignment was off because the car was going straight and steering wheel was a little tilted. but there isn't any vibrations that i could notice. the wheel that i hit seems to be a little out of place.. but as i rotate the wheel, it rotates steady and straight.

so as i was driving, my brakes were acting up. as i pressed the brakes, a strange sound appeared. a sound like a rock got stuck in the brake pads or something. but as i was driving and braked a couple more times, the ANTI-LOCK light came on and brakes stopped making any sounds and worked great. except the fact that the ABS stopped working. every time when i turn the car off and then back on, the brakes worked bad and produce that "grinding" sound. but after about 2-3 minutes, the ANTI-LOCK light comes on and ABS disables and car brakes good.

also as i drive and as the wheels rotate, there's like a clicking type sound like something is in the way.
all of this noise seems like its coming from the front... when i hit the rear drivers side wheel.

what do you think is causing the brakes to not work properly? and ANTI-LOCK light to turn on?

Thank you!
Happy holidays

You need to check the wheel and the hub and the ABS sensor line on that wheel. The grinding could be anything. Jack it up in the air and spin the tire and look for the rub. Check the line for a break, additional rubbing etc.

Thing is that the rubbing is in the front. And I hit the back wheel.

get an alignment done and while the techs are under the car have them inspect the rims and clearance. it might be a messed up brake pad on the calipers.

Well the wheel is bent pretty good where it hit the curb. I'm kind of surprised of how the tire is not letting air through. you can see the wall of the tire creating a "dent" along where the wheel is bent.

the wheel itself looks like it's moved towards the back and there is less gap between the wheel and the rear bumper compared to the wheel and the rear door. What do you think is cause this?

I ordered another wheel. I'm planning to go to the alignment shop once I replace the wheel, or do you think it wouldn't matter if I came there with my bent or new wheel?

The steering wheel is also tilted a little to the left. About 8 degrees.

the rim being dented shouldn't affect the steering wheel alignment but it would affect the balancing. wait till you get the new one and get balance and wheel and steering alignment done.

It looks like the whole wheel is moved back and the back of the wheel is tucked in the car more than the front of the wheel. looks like a control arm is bent or something.. I took the wheel off and couldn't notice anything wrong visibly. I can't find what is causing the wheel to be moved back. maybe it could be a control arm that's bent?

Once the ABS disables, the car drives fine. Haven't noticed and vibrations.

I had the same deal with my CK lancer. I hit a curb at a reasonable speed, right after I hit the curb the ABS would kick in any time I braked. Less than a minute after I hit the curb the ABS light came on and I had no ABS at all.

The diagnosis was that a cog/wheel in the ABS sensor was damaged, after replacement all was well again. If you have to ask, it was very pricey.

A semi relevant picture.

Oh wow! mine is nowhere near as bad as that pic. I mean honesty if you just glance at the wheel, you won't tell how it's out of place.

but I have pretty much the same ABS situation like you had.

So what were all the parts that you had to replace to get the car back to normal other that the ABS sensor?

Thank you!

I know that the abs sensor runs about $200 don't know what else needs to be done though. I think the name brand of the sensor is becks arnley. Something close to that at least

I'm not 100% sure what was done, it was fixed under warranty (shhh). AFAIK work was only done on the ABS sensor. Diagnostic was a couple hundred (NZ$) and the repair pushed the total bill over 1k. But this was about 10 years ago and was done at a dealer in NZ so it might not accurately reflect your bill.

My recommendation is replace the sensor and get an alignment/check to check the state of your strut and arms etc.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but that toothed ring is what the speed sensor uses to calculate the wheel speed for the ABS computer. Replacing that ring will restore your ABS.

I'm thinking the same as you. but I'm wondering what actually chipped the tooth? was it the sensor that hit the tooth at the moment of impact? or what caused the tooth to break off?

I know that I need to replace the axle, now Im wo seeing if I need to replace the hub and sensor..
