I dont think evos break often, they are just very needy! I cant remember the last time my evo didnt NEED something.

I would suggest going through the basics. Check out the:

- the service logs (how often it was serviced? where and when? are there any gaps in the logs?)
- check the motor oil, check the water, check the ayc res in the back
- check for rust underneath
- is the car loved (in the garage, rims are not curbed, and so on) or is it a thrasher (the owner leaves it outside, curbed rims, uncleanness inside etc.)
- check the tyre tread
- drive it around and check for knocks and unusual noises (steer from lock to lock)
- reverse and steer lock to lock
- check for clutch slippage

list goes on and on haha those are the main things I would consider

If you have a look on the mlr site they also have a buyers guide giving some pointers on what to watch out for and what weaknesses each model has. Or even google a Evos buyer guide. Plenty of infos out there

try to get to know the owner a bit and its history. Bunch of high mileage evos driving around without problems. Buying any car with 120k will leave you with potential maintenance but not uneccesarily a hole in your wallet

Test drive it and check all fluids. Make sure its not leaking any fluids and doesnt smoke

kinda off topic but im running a hta3586r on an oem 120,000 longblock with cams and springs and i make 530whp on pump. it grinds 5th at any rpm over 4,000 but other then that it drives fine. ive owned it for the past 40,000 miles and i drive it daily. you have to make sure you change your fluids and get a good safe tune from someone with a good reputation.

It all depends on how the previous owner used the car for. I know not all evos are seen at the track, but it is a high performance car that needs to be driven. With that in mind keep goals within the limits of your wallet. If you got to eat Ramen to get an ebay intake this car is NOT for you....also things get kinda expensive when the Mod-Bug bites you.

Try to get a history report and ask as many questions as possible. At that many miles you probably should ensure the timing belt has been done at least once if not twice. And just check for all the usual maintenance items.

Nothing wrong with high milage. I bought my 9 at 114k 1 owner garage kept stock beisdes exhaust and its the best most relaible car ive ever had.
