Another Death whine

hey gents, I have a 05 evo 8 with aprox 55k on it. I bought the car with a leaking t case and death whine ( got a good deal on car ) so I bought it anyways. I did my research and all and decided that best route was to send it into shepards. before I got a chance to take it off the car and send it off . the tcase went. I took it off the car and when I was draining the fluid in trans I seen metal shavings. decided to rebuild the trans also. I ssent them both into sheps and got them back and put back on the car. did a clutch replacement while I was at it. I put the car back together and I still had that whine. my mechanic told me to break it in. I did drove it for about 3k and it got worse. sure enough I started hearing noises from the rear diff. I decided to look into it and as I was draining the fluid metal shavings came out. I thought maybe the whine was because of the differential.

I sent the rear diff into sheps again and got it rebuilt.
recently I put it back on and the car still has the whine and doesn't seem right.
I filled all the fluids to the correct levels and everything
I NEED HELP! WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?

in the end I got a not so good deal and im dumping money into the car .

What fluids did you use for the rear diff, t-case and transmission? Metal shavings are normal, that's why the drain plugs are magnetic

are you 100% sure it is the rear diff whining? I have been in cars where the turbo spool sounds similar to the death whine

I used the fluids Sheptrans sent me . I can't recall what they were honestly .

To answer the second question . I'm confident it's not the rear diff whining because I just rebuilt it and the noise from the rear diff stopped .

What shepard told me is that whining is common when the t case or trans has been rebuilt and people take it to the track and launch the car . I have not launched it. So idk why it's whining after a fresh rebuild

If the whine is louder than the radio cranked, you have a problem. If not is normal. Every Evo I have been in whines. Its just what they do. You had everything rebuilt by a great shop. I wouldn't worry about it, if its not ridiculously loud.

I had a t-case start whining 5 days after a rebuild on my VIII, never got louder and never blew up, no matter how many times I launched it. I remember not caring if it popped so I don't think I ever checked the fluid to see if it was actually bad, haha.

First I would try to pinpoint where the whine is coming from. If its verified that its coming from the front. It could be a failing ACD pump or clutch engagement issue.

Also, a lot of beginners do not fill their Transfercase to the correct level of fluid. Make sure that you have put at least .58 qt of fluid in there.

Its is coming from the rear. It could be a failing or noisy fuel pump or the rear diff fluid.

In any case, its important to know which fluids are being used. Some fluids will make the drivetrain nosier than normal.

They do make noise in general. Do you have any friends with modified evos or someone who has experience with them? If so take them for a ride and see if they think it's normal. If it's not to loud then I wouldn't worry about it.

hmm

What gear/rpm are you hearing the whine? Our first gear is straight cut so first gear should make alittle noise, also if any of the gears are slightly worn then they will whine even though technically they're fine.

Your turbo is probably going out. Borrow a turbo or buy a used one to test out.

My was rebuilt and it still has a whine, I believe this is normal (going on 40k miles now). The difference is that the whine is not like firetruck loud like it was when it blown

It will not be silent, I can almost guarantee that, likely you are being to ****.... which is exactly how I was.

ps, upgraded diff mounts also promote a whine too. Food for thought.

Have you been in other evo's that around your same age/mileage? Mine can whine under certain circumstances, and thats pretty normal for these cars. Without anything else to go on its too hard to diagnose like this but other things can cause a whine too, like tires. The rear diff will make noise if the clutch plates where rearranged ( see this https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...y-factory.html ).

Thanks for all the input guys ! The noise is definatly from the from . It's not the turbo for sure since I just swapped in a fp which is pretty darn new . I'm starting to think it's normal . It's not rediculously loud . I think I'm just being **** . Plus I havnt driven the car for 7 months since I recently got back from a deployment .
