VIII MR BOV, not happy of the change of sound since, suction pipe replacement.
SubscribeHi guys,
Im currently running 20 - 22 psi of boost.
and recently changed the suction pipe from the Air filter to the Turbo.
The car is equipped with the VIII MR BOV, and the valve is fairly new.
Previously with the bellow rubber pipe, the BOV used to make more of a
*whistle* sound when changing gears.
Now that i have replaced the rubber one with a alloy suction pipe (slightly
larger diameter and most likely doesn't form a dent on the pipe under load)
It makes more of a 'hissing'; "TSHHHSCH" sound.
If anything, it sounds like it may have quietened down slightly as well. (i would've thought it would create more of a sound)
The tone is not as graceful sounding in my opinion.
Either the pipe has caused a more "tinny" sound… or something is wrong e.g requires a tune…(just for a suction pipe?)
Anyone have experienced the same?
cheers

Also i forgot to mention earlier, i replaced the lower Intercooler pipe with the ETS
Does anyone have a logical…'explanation'?

The "TSHHHSCH" sound sounds normal to me. Thats what I would hear when I had a IX DV. Maybe you have a slight boost leak somewhere? I would also recommend upgrading to the IX DV. IMO, its one of the best DV upgrades out there. Its a solid piece of engineering.

Intake brand? Using an open element filter or the OEM Airbox with a filter? Are you on a stock turbo? Make a recording of the sound? Sounds like the metal intake is amplifying or softening the "TSHHHSCH". The OEM rubber snorkel has "ribs" which diffuse the by-passed air to prevent the MAF from going bonkers. A metal intake is completely smooth and open which makes the "TSHHHSCH" more pronounced but less sharp sounding. Try whistling with your mouth wide open.
Is it really a big deal for your audiophile ears? Sh8t i loved the rice o roni laser blast sound of the Greddy Type-S on my Eclipse GST but I have grown into appreciating the hassle free IX DV. None of this adjusting spring tension to prevent compressor surge.

- GruppeM, K&N open filter.
- Stock IX turbo
- partial Greddy 2.75" upper intercooler pipe (top section only, ETS upper going ON soon)
- ETS 2" lower intercooler pipe
- Stock intercooler (ETS intercooler will be on soon)
- approx 3" unnamed brand, alloy suction pipe suction pipe kit
- EVO VIII MR BOV (approx 4 months old)
apparently the VIII MR BOV was of better performance than the IX MR BOV?
My goal for the stock turbo to be at 25PSI… apparently thats the limit of any of the VIII OR IX MR BOVs.
Im not one for sudden changes in any matter in life.
i may get used to it and probably get over the fact that I've lost approx 1/4 of the sound and the whistle.
I thought the Type S and Tial are very durable items?

normal, get rid of it for a tial if you want to change it.

the sound is 100% from the change in pipe. material, routing, etc., etc. Doesn't matter what DV you get, the spool will sound the same. DV will only change the sound of the release

the spool, either sounds the same or may have been slightly louder…
nothing drastic to notice.
However, disappointed with the BOV.
Im guessing, the weaker release sound; was also affected by the new 2" Lower IC pipe. (more volume) The OEM one looked terribly thin at 1.25"
Probably, it will sound even weaker; when i replace the stock intercooler with a larger 3.5" FMIC
and with a stock turbo, 20-22psi of boost, it will have even less pressure
and larger volume to fill, therefore more lag and even weaker sounding
BOV? great...

Wow I didn't know the sound was more important than performance. If you want just sound, this is he wrong platform for you buddy. Do not be so upset about "sound". This bov thing is like the the most newb turbo owner thing. Stick with the 9 bov, it will do fine for 25 psi. I run 25 psi witth my 9 bov and it is great! Trust me the sound is your turbo spooling and bov releasing with that intake. I would highly suggest a tune after mods too. You cant just bolt parts on with out a tune. Especially any flow mods. Good luck! Oh, upgrading your intercooler to a 3.5 is great, I highly doubt you will feel any difference in turbo spool. Again, please don't be upset about the sound.

I definitely did not mention anything about 'sound', being more important than 'performance'
as i mentioned, Ive never been one that likes, change…
tune is definitely coming, its just that i still have the Invidia o2 housing. Sard fuel pump, ETS 3.5" FMIC and ETS upper IC pipe still to go on…
theres no point tuning the car prior to those items.
i haven't been doing any WOT, just general driving short distances and I've noticed the difference.

Spool will be louder going from a stock pipe to an alloy pipe (or any pipe that's not stock)
Also this whole thread is about sound. Performance was not changed at all unless the pipe affected the car enough to need a new tune

well whatever it is, what you are hearing it is normal with the hardpipe intake you got. you have some nice parts going on, do you have a full exhaust also? you will need it.
