Help with no third gear at high rpm
Help with no third gear at high rpm
Okay guys so I've seen a few threads here and there on this but nothing really concrete on my issue. So here goes, I have an 04 Evo 8 with 83xxx miles on it. The issue I am having is shifting into third at high rpms. It started out of nowhere and is starting to **** me off. It is not a consistent problem I would say 6 times out of ten it will do it. But when it does I will be driving the car very spiritually lol and if I'm at 6500-7000 rpm and on the 2nd to 3rd gear shift it'll be like I pushed the shifter into a wall. No pops no grinds it doesn't kick back or nothing it just stops dead in its track. Like something is blocking it. I have to let go slow down feather the gas and then she's in no problem. I'm just lost because at regular city driving it will drive perfectly, all five gears go in smooth no problem. I've tried adjusting the clutch pedal and it fixed it for a month or so but now it's back. I have changes the trans fluid three times in the 17 months I've had it and no shavings other than normal little specs of metal were seen in the drain plug and that was only on the first change. The issue started with a redline mt-90 + mtl cocktail in it and now it is still doing it with amsoil 75-90 in it.I know there is some issues with ACT clutches that give guys headaches but not sure if this is one of them but I do have an ACT clutch in the car just not sure what kind since it was there when I bought it and I don't remember what the previous owner said it was. But other than that it is a stock trans along with the shifter cables are also stock, I have torque solutions under hood and shifter base solid bushings and a ralco rz shirt shifter. Car is slightly modded but nothing crazy I don't think it's a "to much power for trans " issue. Was thinking maybe it's the short shifter or worn cables? Don't know but any input would be appreciated immensely thanks
Subscribed because I have a similar-sounding issue shifting into third at the track.
My gears don't all go in smoothly as you say however. I've always suspected it was my synchros on their way out.

Well I've come to the conclusion after owning two evos and driving 3 other ones all 8's and 9's that that all the trannys shift a little notchy if you will but it's perfectly normal. That's what I mean it shifts smoothly lol like as best as an evo trans will shift lol but obviously out issue isn't normal so that's why I'm looking for help. Anyone?
I don't have an evo but my civic is known to have similar problems. It's usually a combination of the cmc not being able to build up enough pressure to fully disengage the clutch, stretched cables, bad syncros after enough bad shifts because of the cmc.
I have an ACT on my 8 with the ralco ss kit and havent had any trouble shifting at high rpm, however many will say that ACT clutches have a history of causing bad high rpm lockout ... highly doubt its your trans cocktail since everyone uses one of those two options.... personally it sounds like a little mix of both act clutch lockout and bad syncros because of how badly its happening to you

Synchros going bad would cause uneasy shifting at all times though this is just at higher rpms and like I said it isn't consistent...idk tho just trying to get other ideas so thanks
When I installed my SS I remember there being a c clip above the ball joint I needed to shave down because it was actually hitting the shifter housing and would keep the shifter from fully engaging into third gear ... take off the center consol and see it thats occuring
Yeah sounds like a lockout issue. I get the same problem with my ACT at times, just like you described. As much as I love my HDSS because it has such a smooth engagement I will be switching to another brand. How many miles are on your clutch? Sounds like you beat on it pretty regularly, how many times have you launched it?
Bleed your clutch. Check your lines. If adjusting the pedal fixed it for a month it makes me think the clutch is either on its way out or the slave/master is starting to fail. You'll find out real quick if either are failing when you go to bleed it.
