New Owner Getting familiar with engine

Hello, was looking around my engine today and noticed a tube that is damn near touching the ground. It's not plugged in just hanging. This isn't my engine but I circled the tube in green. What is this for?

if that tube is long enough to touch the ground I assume you have a catch can somewhere, it goes to that

The previous owner might have taken the catch can off to sell off and let that hang down. It doesn't hurt leaving it unplugged as that's just a breather port.

yeah, with that sort of set-up you have.

you should be running a catch-can.

and probably disconnected like someone said.

second thought, owner didn't want to spend the money on a can and just dumped the tube to the ground.

Stock that hose goes to the intake tube between the filter-MAF and the turbo. If that connection is left open the car won't run right.

Breather valve. Car will run fine, you can plug a little Filter there instead of running a hose but better yet, have catch-can there.

That's not the Fox5.56's engine bay. If there's a nipple on the intake and open you will have a problem. Car won't run fine.

For those who says it's ok to leave it unplugged and hanging are not too familiar on the importance of a good Pcv system and how important it is. OP, either have it go to catch can and then to intake or some sort of vacuum source or plug it into intake tube. That breather during negative vacuum (off boost) sucks in metered (very important it's after Maf so it's accounted for by Ecu) from intake tube and Pcv valve on other side of valve cover sucks out positive crankcase pressure via intake manifold. During positive pressure (boost), the Pcv valve utilizes it's built in check valve and stops sucking air to manifold and that breather line needs some sort of vacuum to suck crankcase pressure out (intake tube) If not, crankcase pressure can blow rings, seals etc. hence the importance of a good working Pcv system.

Yeah I don't think there is a catch can, so I'll have to buy one any recommendations? They seem pretty expensive.

Great info...so when is a catch can needed? at what horsepower should one consider a catch can? I never see a port on intake on many high horsepower evos- could running a port on the intake help reduce crankpressure at those levels?

That's a good question, there isn't a hp # needed to run a catch can. As long as there is a good vacuum source you can have a catch can at a stock configuration. A lot of these high hp cars usually don't run in closed loop vacuum operation and stay at a positive setting so they probably just have some sort of vacuum pulling crankcase pressure out and not worried about introducing fresh air during vacuum settings. Of course this is just what I'm thinking they do as I am not a high hp car owner or them.

Some good info can be found here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/the...system.366890/

majority of catch cans i see are around the 100 - 150$ mark.

The two that i hear people have problems with are Weapon R & Cusco.

Weapon R - does not bolt in easily with the strut brace. (it actually designed to sit in the frame of the strut)

Cusco - designed for JDM vehicles (LH drive) may not bolt in easily.

but both are possible if you are determined.

Ive not heard about the other brands.

Ok, that's much better, the one I saw was like 250+, I'll definitely put it on my list of upgrades. Thanks for the info
