Seat Belt Light and Chime due to bad wires. Not your usual problem
So a couple of weeks ago I decided to look into why my car would always give me a seat belt indication and chime. I was told by the previous owner that all I had to do was plug in the connectors that are on the seat belt locks for the driver and passenger seat belt locks. Upon noticing that they were already connected I went a step further and removed the center console. To my amazement I found the connector and sensor dirty and soaked with a sticky substance. My imagination tells me that the previous owner lied to me and infact had no clue as to why the light and chime wouldnt go away. To me it seems like he repeatedly spilled sodas and drinks in the cup holders and the fluids must have made their way down to the seat belt lock sensors. Right?
At that point the fluids must have ruined the sensors and in turn shorted out the wires running down the length of the center console past the shifting assembly. I ran my hand up the length of the wire bundle that the sensors were a part of and I couldn't believe what I found. All the wires including the seat belt lock sensors were chaffed and frayed beyond recognition. The wires were stiff and hard in composition and stuck to each other like a synthetic clothing material that gets stuck to your skin when your burned. The whole bundle was solid as a rock and as ran the length of the wire up towards the dash where they disappeared and my hand could no longer go I felt the wires were still hard and all the colors of the insulation flaked off like dust and were all over my hand.
My feelings are that of concern and worry. I think my car is now a ticking time bomb because if the wrong wire arcs to my fuel tank there can be dangerous consequences right?
So I unplugged the SRS module under the center dash in hopes that I could isolate a dangerous situation and get the chime and light for the belts to go away but surprisingly they stayed! I am probably in over my head with this problem. Could anyone tell me if they have encountered this? Can spilling of drinks and sodas on the seat belt sensors start such a huge chain reaction? Please help
