Any interest in a trailer hitch for the evo 8/9?

Just had a hitch mount fabbed for my evo9 to cart around bikes and track day tires and not have to deal with a roof rack. Good buddy designed + built it [race mechanic and fabricator]. It's based on a 1+1/4 Curt receiver that he welds a cross bar and 'ears' to catch the bumper bolts and an L bracket on the opposite end of the receiver to bolt to the diff/subframe mount. All steel, painted or powdercoated depending on quantity. Very strong, can jack / tow the car easily and NO CUTTING / MODIFICATIONS to the car required. Straight bolt on - remove bumper cover and bumper, and this bolts right on.

My buddy is a business, so there is a very small profit in this for him to make it worth his while. $400 per + shipping from CA [bulky and about 25lbs so won't be cheap. $300 each if more than 10 are wanted, which would be powdercoated.

Works awesome, virtually invisible on the car. It does locate the receiver below the stock bumper so keep that in mind. With my bike rack i've only scraped it once on a very steep driveway departure.

PM me for interest.
thanks
jim

final design prior to finish welding and paint.

with my 1-up rack on it.

speed tested to well over legal =) and a 9 hr road trip.

The EVO hitch has been a popular thread here on EVOM

I like the look but would like see a few more pics of the hitch w/out the bike rack installed

Also, Can you take a pic of the square tube that extends towards the rear diff. What does that attach to?

Thanks

The hitch is installed on my car, i can take a couple more pics but the one i included is pretty much it. What do you want to see more of that you can't see in the one i attached? There's not really any detail you're missing..

The rear bracket bolts to the rear diff / subframe mount. Pretty sure it's the 2 rearmost bolts on #5 in this diagram.. if you look under the rear of your car you can't miss them.

I made one that was almost identical a few years ago, it was fine for light use and around town. But I hauled a sports bike 1000 miles with it and it ended up bending the mounting points that it bolts to.

how would this hold up pulling a 4x7 trailer with a race quad on the back?

I'm looking for a hitch as well since i want to bring my motorcycle from NY to FL. idk if i would trust that hitch for that, so making something a little stronger looking and lowering the price would be ideal. i just don't feel like making one since is way to cold out.

1up - thx for the feedback. as i said there isn't much structure back there so it's light duty to be safe.

dsmtuner - no idea. like i said, i'm not a business. anything i offered would be a guess at best. i wouldn't do it.

rondata - again, probably not the right tool for the job [a 1500mile tow. rent a uhaul]. there's no point making the hitch stronger since it's limited by the available attachment points to the car. the bumper bolts to a couple layers of sheetmetal - there's no real structure back there.

i had this built to cart around a bike on weekends or trackday wheels to events [4 hours away at most].

I tow a 1200lb trailer regularly with my setup. However with a 1200lb trailer, your tongue weight should be 120lbs, which is pretty much nothing.

Mine is a modified base lancer hitch with a JDM bumper. It's extremely solid.

I reinforced my mounting points with a 5/16" cold rolled plate steel bridging the gap between them mounting flush. (The problem most people have is that they mount this hitch to the thin sheet metal of the roll pan. a recipe for disaster.) It then bolts to the lower tow loop.

In fact, I am packing up for my next move which is Madison, WI to Galveston TX. Can't wait till I am out of the north, the salt and snow for 3 winters has beat the crap out of my car.... I was only supposed to be here 13 weeks!

In other words... Done right, the Evo can tow, without any problems.

Did you weld the 5/16" plate or just added it? do you have pictures?

Very interested in this. I recently picked up a roof rack to haul my mountain bike that I am not happy with at all. PayPal ready.

For the DIY folks.....The 03-06 Outlander hitch will work, but depending on your muffler sometimes needs to be modified. It attaches to the frame rails. Need to notch out the tow hook, but the hitch has one anyway.
