Short Throw Shifter 70% !?!

Word seemed to leak out time and again during the development of our shifter and it's finally complete. We've created a shifter that mounts completely in the stock box (http://photos.yahoo.com/prototype_fabs)and is marked 70% shorter than stock. It may not be as easy on the daily commuter, but it's a must have item for a serious race car.

PM or Email me at Prototype-fabs@sc.rr.com for more info.

I can't disclose everything we did to attain our goal of 70%. However, I assure you it's not just a cropped top shifter. The throw is significantly shorter. In both of our test evo's our drivers claimed that it was a bit uncomfortable letting off the clutch at first as it seemed too short to have actually engaged. This seemed to present a problem. Then after 2-3 days of driving both drivers had grown to love it. At which point it just became a matter of perfecting the design.
One of the drivers went from a stock shifter and the other from a Perrin shifter (45%). The Perrin was listed on E~bay on the third day

yea, but how hard is it to shift with that? im sure theres less leverage right? the b&m is actually harder to shift even though it is shorter and smoother.

any ideas?

It does take more effort to shift, which is why I say it's not so much for daily commuters. On the same note, it's not so hard that it's uncomfortable to shift.

Most of the aftermarket shifters don't change the pivot point (The ball location) with respect to the base much if at all.. when I compared the stock Evo shifter (off another car, not mine) with the B&M shifter I purchased, the most obvious thing is that its just shorter from the ball to the tip.. (I can see the jokes coming) so there's probably nothing wrong with just cutting down the stock shifter and rethreading it to fit, thats the way we USED to do it before it was easy to get short shifters on some of the cars I owned (82 Mazda RX-7)

Basically it increased the effort along with shortening the throw, but it made a huge difference.

I dunno, 70% seems like alot, but it certainly can be a cool thing.

Regardless of how you make your shifters (Its not a bad thing to rework a stock shifter) You should package it with a new shifter boot that fits the short shifter correctly.

can't.... hold... back..... must... make ..... fun....of.... Jack.....

i dunno though, it seems like a cool idea and it does look pretty cool in that pic but i do think that it will make shifting much harder. i would be more interested in maybe 50% shorter or something like that.

I really like this prototype, hope it makes it to production. I've driven a car with a massively low short ****er, and after you break it in for a bit, it's not bad.
