Looking through old build threads and I found this....

Does this sound weird, but occasionally I wake up at night...maybe early morning around 3.30, I grab my iphone and see whats going on in the forum, I like reading through old build threads, snap shots in time, years back... starting off with great excitement and lots of pics on parts and build lists etc, the outcome is usually some track beast pushing 400 plus HP. I found one thread that has left me pondering on builds, having an IX with a light tune and pipe I think we all dream of doing a full build, 2.4 with the lot and getting it out on the track or road to have some fun etc

Have a read,

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/pr...-4l-build.html

50 pages plus and 2 years in the making

The OP seemed to have all bases covered and was doing alot of work himself, lots of enthusiasm and answered everyones questions....so

I flick to the end of the thread and almost 2 years to the month i read this on page 53 from the OP

keep telling myself that I need to do at least one track day with it before she's gone, but I don't know if that will actually play out or not.

It's to the point where I have so much work into the car that I really have no desire to drive it. This has been my downfall with previous cars as well.

I purchased the car for $15,500, put $18,500 more into it, and will be hard pressed to get over $20K. Gotta love the Evo market.

Then this a couple of months later on the last page 53 from the OP

Car went to a good home today. It's been a wild past few years with this car, but I can't thank everyone around me enough who helped me get the car where it is today.

This thread sadened me a bit thinking of this guy puting his heart into a 2 year build, did he burn himself out spending to much time on it, not sure? It certainly has made me think about how I would build a car, not just the list of parts but how far are you going to go and how will you be at the end to enjoy your work

Only you would know the answer. Some enjoy the journey, whereas others like the idea but don't like the end result. It all comes down to your level of commitment.

Its very easy to go overboard and then after all the money spent you are afraid of blowing it up and spending the money again.

Or getting screwed over by shops that claim to know what they are doing and when they make a mistake they try to explain it in a way that ends up with you having to pay more money to get it done right.......and then after all the money spent all the lies and broken promises, missed due dates..........your left with a car you thought you loved, but you decided a driving a possible grenade is not worth the trouble or headache after all the struggle leading up to that.

Anyone who's been in the the game long enough has seen this time and time again. It really is sad but it happens more often than not.

And most of the time people end up parting out so now there's nothing left of the car and it just wastes away.

This is why i don't do full builds on any of my cars. Fun mods and enjoy the car.

The other thing to consider is the more you mod this car the more it becomes like an exotic car. How often do you see exotics daily driven? The same reasons of cost vs. usesge. Also the problem of usability in slow traffic and many of us who don't live near nice roads. Could also be like previous posters have said the journey was more interesting than the destination.

I see this happen more times that I can comprehend. People spend way to much time/money on their cars only to not have any fun with them. Their car is down more than it is driven. People seem to get carried away and want the fastest car on the planet. If only more people built their cars to enjoy instead of trying to be the fastest, I am sure there would be a lot more running/driving evos out there with satisfied owners. I feel sorry for the people that put their heart & soul, most of all, their hard earned money, only to sell off their car before they enjoyed what they were building.

A full build would be amazing, but a stock motor Evo can be plenty fast and fun.

I feel that I can speak to this.

I did not go thru a 2 year big build on my car...search me and you will see what I have gone through over the last 3 years.

I purchased my evo on new year's eve day 2011 and till now I have maybe driven it (not enjoy it) for a total of about 6 months.

Now that my litigation is over I am seriously struggling what to do, sell or keep.

I by no means can speak for anyone else but I can till you for 100% certainty that if you have ever spent months or years without your car and then finally get it back something is different.

I have dreamed for the better part of 3 years what it would be like to have my car back. After all of the broken promises and highs and lows of litigation I still do not have a clue what I will end up doing.

So before we all jump in playing armchair quarterback, take a moment and try to understand how it would feel to not have your baby for extended periods of time.

I have been one to go overboard on a build and enjoyed the car for a while (Mustang not an Evo) only to have little problems creep up on me and make the build frustrating. Sometimes the journey is fun and other times you do get worried about blowing it up. Me personally I enjoy a mild build now and don't want to do a full race car type build again. To much time and money for so little joy. I have a close friend who is the opposite, he enjoys the all out build and generally sells within 6 months of finishing the build. To each there own.

I would be careful of any recommendations coming from someone affiliated with spec ops motor sports. They lie to your face, steal your parts off your car ( wheres my greddy pressure solenoid *******s?) then blame you after they blow up your engine because they run it out of gas completely on the dyno and keep trying to boost it.

From: Why do they always call the Evo the Dark Side?
http://www.bowlsfilms.com/latest/201...s-motor-sports

That's Mine's, like the guys that build the Mine's Skyline.

The guy talks about "extracting the beauty of the stock car". To me, that is the best way to stay in a happy place. Once you start going crazy you are building something else and IMHO better off with a different platform.

Here's another thread on the subject from TIC on NASIOC... similarly wise.
