Just wondering if anyone has ever done the 5-speed tranny with the 6-speed shifter console. Did you use the 6-speed shifter box with the 5-speed cables?? is that even possible????

 

As probably you know 6 speed has reverse safety ring you have to lift before engaging.so no,6 speed shifter box will not work with 5 speed cables . Center consoles are the same.

 

center consoles aren't the same unfortunately. The shifter box for the 6-speed sits about an inch or two more towards the middle of the car than the 5-speed. The best comparison I can think of is fitting a 2jz 6-speed transmission into a mk3 supra. lol.

 

It is sad that we have differed opinions on center console being the same. I did 5 speed swap to my brothers MR and I reused MR console

 

Well it does work, cause i did the same with my mr console....But if you notice, the placement of 2nd, 4th, and reverse are a lot "lower" if that makes sense.....

 

I know what you mean . Shifter box needs to be from 5 speed rest of it personal preference I guess.maybe other guys will chime in.

 

The shifter boot from the MR also leaves a sizable gap with a 5 speed if you don't swap those

The answer is NO. The center consoles in the evo 8/9 5 speed and 6 speed are not the same. They are different in looks, fitment, and part number. The steel bracket that supports them under the shifter is also different in looks, fitment, and part number.

 

I was one of the first to do the 5spd swap WAYYYYYYY back in 2007 and I reused my 6spd console, 6spd boot and 6spd shift knob. If I remember correctly I had to dremel away one very small part under the opening that you couldn't see once installed.

Either way. It worked for me.

One can certainly get away with it with modifications and reuse the parts.. Some prefer the look of the MR interior shifter console (like you and I), others prefer the 5 speed console with the grey ring surround like on the steering wheel. I wish that that they kept them the same

 

razorlab, how did you get it to fit so properly?
any modifications on the inside.
I swapped in the 5 shifter box today and it won't fit with the boot on?
