Sorry wasn't aware that wasn't my gas tank, but do any of you auto repair guys think this is repairable? The insurance company said it wasn't a total lose

 

damn..that's not your gas tank, the gas tank is further infront of the rear subframe below the seats. it's just the spare wheel compartment that got hit, nothing but sheetmetal. the evo is a unibody it won't be an easy fix. it would have to be cut out and a lot of fabrication done to repair. There may be structural damage though. Honestly it may be a total loss.

 

thats not your fuel tank dude, Thats your unibody all bent up. The fuel tank is under the rear seat area, that area thats all smashed and curled up is your trunk, and you see where that rear suspension bolts up is all bent thats not good. You need to take this into a shop for an inspection, also place a claim with the person who hit you because this is gonna be expensive.

My insurance does there estimate then hits up their insurance company for the money back. But they did say when I bring it in for repairs that if it cost more then the money they gave me they will just have to do some paperwork and it will be covered. Well so they say.

 

The way it goes is there will be an initial estimate that will be paid to the shop then as the work begins and additional damage is uncovered there will be supplemental payments made to the shop to cover those damages. Sometimes the insurance will determine a car is repairable on the initial estimate, then as requests for supplements come in it will cross the barrier and become a total. Depends on the insurance company, the shop etc. Many games are played in the auto repair industry, which is why its important to involve yourself with the repair and really develop trust with the shop doing the work to ensure you are getting the quality of repair you are expecting.

 

It doesn't look that bad to me. Check if the rear suspension is where it is supposed to be - might require a little pulling.

 

I'm not seeing any issues with the rear suspension, just body damage.

 

not the suspension itself, but where that aluminum subframe bolts up to the unibody just in front of all that damage. Its hard to tell from the picture but that might have been bent out of place.

oh, gotcha. based on how soft that hit looks i dont think anything would have been damaged there. the rear bumper is hardly moved out of place, looks like the other car went up under his rear end or tapped him going not super fast

 

You just can't tell from pictures. You really have to get it on a frame jig and start taking some measurements. Things often look fine and then you try and square them up and you find the whole rear of the car has shifted in one direction. Im not saying thats the case here, just that "frame Damage" can be very hard to judge until you start measuring.
