Clockspring question
Clockspring question
Figured out I need a new clockspring. Had an SRS light that was intermittent. Before I bought a $200 scanner, I decided to check connections on anything that could be and apparently the clockspring is a usual suspect. The light goes out or on based mostly on steering wheel angle. And the results are pretty repeatable, so I'm pretty sure that's it.
I've seen replacement units from $30, $50, up to the OEM of $170. Anyone have experience with the generic aftermarket ones?
Any advice on the replacement? Doesn't seem like a horrible job.
Thanks,
AC

Just did this with the OEM part. Pretty easy and seems to be working. That 8mm hex bolt for the steering wheel is no joke. I used a big T-handle and a cheater bar to break it loose. Also, the bolt does not come out all the way, just get it fully loose and pull the steering wheel off.
Checked the old one and it did have an intermittent connection on one of the airbag wires, hence the SRS light.

Good to know in case this happens again. But I did get 100k out of the OEM one
I took the old one apart and on cable/pin 3 I had intermittent comms. If I tensioned it, comms came back, so it was definitely a problem inside the wire.
