dealer underfilled oil

Hi guys,

Took the 9 RS in for an oil change at Mitsi dealer.

Brought 5 quarts of Amsoil Signature oil and specifically told them to fill 4.8.

The mechanic forgot to use one of the five bottles, therefore filling just 3.8quarts.

Car was then started and let idle, then shut off, and oil level measured, at which point the dipstick showed oil slightly below min notch.

I instructed dealer to put remaining 1quart into the engine.

No odd noise was heard from the engine.

My question is: has there or will there be damage to the engine?

thanks!

P.S. also a little unimpressed at the mechanic trying to yank off the oil filter adapter with a wrench while the oil filter and the adapter are still stuck to the engine.

No damage will occur from that. Even if you didnt catch it, no damage would have occurred, as long as it was resolved before too long. Realistically, its wise to under fill a little bit and idle it, and recheck it. You dont want to overfill it.

Yeah, i agree

Running 1 qt low for that short period will not hurt. Good thing you caught that!

I dont trust those that have worked on my car either. Always have found something not done right

Thanks, dude!
On the one hand, I tell myself there is no damage. But, on the other hand, I have this lingering thoughts of engine damage from low oil circulation during startup (keeping in mind they replaced the oil filter as well which had raised the required amount of oil) - probably just a paranoia. Good thing it was just a few minutes of idle.

After putting in another full quart, the dipstick now reads a bit above maximum mark.

Thank you! what a relief
I totally agree with you - it is very difficult to put your full trust into a mechanic and just go in to any dealer and wait totally blind-sighted.
Also I don't allow them to take my 9RS out for a test drive (joyride) after service.

yah your fine (as others have said) the oil pump pickup is at the very bottom of the pan. Just sitting there idling there is no way it would run dry if you had oil on the dipstick.

Thanks again, biggie.

Another quart in and the dipstick is reading just slightly above max notch with warm engine. So, I can deduce that it was at most missing 1 liter of oil.

On the flip side, car pulls very strongly after with stock map and oil change.

Going to give her a wash tmr then back to daily driving my BRZ!
