CA Smog problem

I am over due for smog and am sure mine will not pass with everything new going on here. Currently my 03 has FP green, FP cast manifold, aem intake, hks 272/264 cams, RC 1200cc injectors and fmic. It is currently tuned but the way Ca can see tunes now is making me feel uncomfortable. Is there a way to get a stock Rom? Is it possible to toss the stock injectors back in and smog the vehicle with the cams still in without a CEL? What is my best option at this moment?

best,

brunoboy

You have some work to do if you go back to stock.
Stock cat in place with rear O2 active?
Stock injectors
Depends on what FP green OG? (Can change nameplate with stock turbo) Yes they look at it. If newer larger housing will have to replace with stock turbo
Stock air box and filter.
Stock BOV
Can try fitting exhaust heat shield cover on exhaust mani to hide FP logo.
Stock flash may be ok with your cam. Will have to try and see how it runs.
When you say overdue have you been on a non-op?

I paid registration but the cars been down and haven’t been able to smog it to register it. I have an OG Green on it and stock IX BOV, stock heat shield on the exhaust manifold. AEM CARB legal intake. Stock cat.

Mine was similar. Even had Cossie M2 cams. Even on E-85 with stock cat it had better numbers then stock.
I can tell you not all smog stations are the same. If you can stay away from the ones that are more detail oriented...Do it!
Last smog I did was 2010 and at that time I suspect they knew something was up with tuned cars but did not start dealing out Ref citations until lately. Now there appears to be an awareness of it as well as a requirement to flash back to stock.
If you live in Cali like I have since the 70's you have to play the game. Just seems to be getting tougher lately. If I still owned my car now I would have a parts swap fest of all visual items and a spare ECU with stock flash. Like many have stated before it is best to maintain the stock airbox. Nothing sets off alarms more then non-stock features...CARB approved or not. Good luck

Some people are saying that our cars are being randomly picked....

You can pass smog and then randomly check the bar site and you are flagged for the next round...

I have a buddy that is a smog tech, he said they recalibrated the machines and during smog checks, they can read the tune file off your Ecu. Stock rom, CVN, Cal ID all must match up or you’re sent to ref. I’ve smogged many cars with tunes before the new programs and such so I am looking for the best way to get around it.

best,

From what I see in the other thread: everyone is still trying to figure everything out. It sounds like IXs can have their ECUs read and VIIIs are being selected at random? Or all that get flagged are at random? Not really much info out there.
I'll say it's easiest to just go back to stock before smog than to have to see the ref. Just my opinion. Good luck, dude.

I recently went through this. Unless you want to “pass” and risk getting flagged for a bar test randomly later, you’ll have to go back to stock and flash the OEM ROM that belongs to your car. They can see if the ecu has a modded “stock” rom with tephra because it spits out a different checksum. It must be an actual oem rom. Otherwise you may pass with a tephra modded rom at the smog shop, but it may be flagged for a bar test afterwards.

i had to go back to stock minus cams and had to go to a dealership willing to flash me back to stock. My local dealer said they couldn’t do that because my immobilizer wasn’t compatible and I required a new ECU lmao, *******s. Drove to another dealership 2 hours out and they did it no problem. Bought a 2nd used ECU and now I have my OEM rom in my OEM ECU and my tunes in the second one. Good luck

edit: this is on a IX. You’ll need the newest ROM with the airbag recall that ends in 6, not 5

How much did they charge you for the oem rom flash? I am probably going to swap to a eprom dsm ecu and run ecmlink as a secondary ecu and run stock for smog.

If I remember correctly, it was around $75

Save $75 and do it yourself. Just copy your immobilizer code over to the ROM before flashing.

correct. You can do this for free yourself, but like razorlab said make SURE you don’t lose your immobilizer code. That is the specific reason I had to go to the dealer and have them do it, I lost mine. They had to “re-VIN” my ecu
