Is it worth even trying?

I am in the process of selling my current vehicle, and hope to get a new car soon. I have planned on holding out for the Evo, but after talking to several people, I am reconsidering. I have been told, that even if they do come out priced around 28,600 dollars, they will be marked up 5-10K over that. There is no way that I can afford spending that much on the car, seeing how I am only 24, about to get married, and currently looking to buy a house. I can afford the monthly payments if the car is around 30K, but an additional 5k ontop of that would kill my budget. So, my question is, should I wait on the Evo, put a downpayment down as soon as I hear they are accepting them? Or should I just bite the bullet and buy a WRX now, and upgrade it later so it can keep up with the stock Evo's. I'm just afraid that if I wait, the supply may be so limited, that I stand no chance at getting one. I heard someone say there will only be 4000 available, that would mean only like 5 in my state probably (KY, home of the domestics).

The STi isn't out either. Subaru has about as much out about the US release of the STi as Mitsubishi does about the Evo...if not less. Not to mention, isn't the STi specially tuned by STi? I'd imagine the number sold in the US would be equal to or less than the number of Evos.

Latest rumor i heard was that the STi will be available next summer, and will retail for 36-38K, which is out of my price range. I read on a WRX forum that you could actually buy a WRX, and upgrade it to perform better than the STi for half of the difference in price. But I'm not very familiar with them, so I'm not sure valid any of that is.

The SCC project WRX is (according to them) "comparable to an STi" but it's still no STi. I think they use inverted struts and weird suspension components...something to that effect anyway. Kinda neat. I'm sure there are plenty of other differences, but I generally don't research cars I can't afford because it's too much of a tease.

You could have a damn nice WRX, new wheels, brakes, suspension, and probably a new tranny for the difference in price. Not a bad way to go at all if you ask me.

There may be some dealers asking 5k over at first. But, if you can wait several months after they come out you will probably be able to get a deal on one (at least for msrp). I know of several dealers that always mark-up new released cars that they know there is a strong interest for..only to sell the same car for under msrp months later. The Sti, from what I've heard, will be even more limited...something like 700-1700 brought over. Everyone knows the WRX is going to have a redesigned front end for MY04 don't you? That means we are getting a WRX Sti with no bug eyes.

I liked the bug eyes. The only thing I thought looked ugly were the tails.

Dont mind me saying this but if you are 24, looking to get married, and buying a house, a new car should be the last of your current concerns. You can live without a new car, however nice it is but the others like your wife and house is a lot more important.
Get them in order first and with whatever finances you have left, see if you can afford the Evo, if not, get something else. An Evo is only a car, nothing more.

That's just my advice to you . . .

I know this, and this is the reason that I am selling my current car. I am paying off all my credit card debt, and putting the money in the bank to earn interest until it comes time to put a downpayment down. I am already paying 750 a month for my apt, plus 400 for my gf's rent, and have been paying all her bills while she is in college. I figure, a move into a house will actually be cheaper for us. She will be graduating next spring to a 35K job, so I won't be the only bread winner anymore. I'm willing to make sacrifices in my spending now, in order to be able to afford the car in the spring. Thanks for the concern though.

Good luck Monkey Man, and I hope it works out for you.

In response to the STI, I think its a great car to go with. Great performance, I like the styling alot, and IMO it will probly have a better quality of fit and finish to it then the EVO, especially in the cabin.

Don't get me wrong, I still love the evo and am going to get one ASAP. But the STI is a sweet car, especially for the money.

The WRX came out in limited numbers at first, I remember trying to find one at a dealer for a good 3 months after they came out, but as soon as they started selling like hotcakes the factory started producing more. I feel this is what will happen with the EVO. If you can't afford the markup at first wait a couple months for the hype to die down and order one at msrp when there are more available. We've waited this long what's a little longer to save a larger down payment

If I were in your shoes I would hold out I'm pretty sure most of us are in the same boat when it comes to finances.I know I am. Try living out here in the bay area. Rent is so high out here. But the car scene is... I'll prolly do the same and trade in my GST for one or just go to EI and just get the EVO 7. But I'm holding out to see what the EVO 8 will come with in January. Good luck though
