.. how does that NOT bake the oil?? I'm pretty niave so help me out. You have 1800 degrees farenheit cooking your exhaust and turbo, oil is lubing the turbo, but the oil doesn't get .. what.. more than a few hundred degrees?

School me damn it..

There are a few things you need to consider...

The first being that the center section of the turbo is not glowing in that picture. The center section is the part that is being lubricated by the oil, it does not reach the same temperatures as the turbine housing, albeit it does get very hot. The second thing you need to consider is that the oil is not sitting stagnant in the turbo (unless of course you shut your car off imediately after a hard run, which is why you buy a turbo timer!). The oil is being pumped through the turbo at a high rate, so even though it is exposed to high temps, it is exposed for very brief periods of time, so the transfer of heat is minimized. The oil is also cooled through the oil cooler to prevent the entire oil supply from being raised in temperature. Thirdly, synthetic oils have the ability to resist exposure to high temps better than standard oils, which is why requires fully synthetic oil to be used in the Evo. Lastly, the center section is being cooled by engine coolant, which helps maintian an oil friendly temperature.
