CF wing help...

Does the factory CF wing serve any purpose? If I have the short spoiler on my EVO is my car any less stable than an EVO with the high CF wing?

Yes, if you are following your buddy that has one and he makes a quick lane change at over 130 mph don't try to follow him. Make it slower.

Yes, the Carbon Fiber wing becomes effective above 85 MPH, reducing lift through the application of downforce. In everyday driving, its effects are neglible. For those that have removed their wings and driven on a track at high speeds, there have been varied reports. Some say it makes a big difference in handling (being less stable and not feeling as "planted") and some say they felt no difference whatsoever.

Unless we have a scientifically controlled study of an Evo with and without the wing, its up to subjective evaluations. Obviously, Mitsubishi put the wing on the car to reduce lift. They race their rally cars with big wings, so somebody feels that it is worth it.

I removed my wing and there may be slightly more steering wheel correction necessary at higher speeds on the highway while going straight. Car is not unstable or anything, even at ahem, 120+ mph. Didn't make a noticeable diff on exit ramps and the like, but I haven't hit a road course or anything making turns above 85mph.

To me, the improved visibility, cake in my pocket, and lower profile are worth it. Chacun a son gout.

I think if it didn't function, I would take it off. I can't see if the cops are behind me or not. It's just impossible.

If it didn't look so good, I would of taken it off already and sold it to someone with a lancer.

I have the low wing and have taken the car well over 120mph (at the track of course) and the car feel plenty stable. I wanted to keep my car as low key as possible and didn't want any kind of extra attention. I've not experienced any drivability issue with the small wing; and yes I've driven evos with the CF wing as well, so this is personal comparison.

I guess that's why you don't translate expressions literally all the time. That's the expression, and it does have the connotation of "to each his own" whatever the literal translation may be. I'm Filipino anyway (although my wife is French canadian, lol).

You gotta remember a couple of things:

1) Really no difference below 85-100 mph
2) Low wing does add downforce, so I have never heard a comparision of downforce between the two at given speeds. My guess is the downforce differential between the two is minimal.
3) If it is soooo great, why does the RS delete it? Don't tell me for weight. The things weighs about as much as a roll of paper towels.
4) It is mostly on there for marketing--relates the street car to the race car.
5) Large wing is mis-understood by cops. It would take to long to explain to Johnny law that our cars came with the large wing and all the other guys are posers.

RS is race track ready. It makes room to replace the wing with something that creates more downforce.

Whether or not to remove it depends on what kind of driving you do. It really is functional but it may not be important depending on your driving style.
