Question on installing a new shift knob

Here is the deal. I have a Momo shift knob that would look nice on my EVO (it does get hot as hell in the summer though). To secure the shift knob I have to tighten 3 little screws and then twist a small little cover piece up and over the screws. The only problem is there seems to be some sort of washer or knotch like thing on the stick that prevents me from doing this without removing the boot. Do any of you know if this piece on the stick is removable? The reason I ask is I don't want to remove the console/boot and then find out it is welded on. Is this piece adjustable?

Thanks in advance.

get a momo leather shift boot. your knob will screw right into it, and it's a lot nicer.

They're like $50

btw, the piece on the stick is NOT removable. The piece is actually molded into the shift lever.

I had the same issue, what I ended up doing is just putting the small cover down on the washer. Then I put the shift knob on as low as I could get it and still access the screws, tighten screws and screw on the cover. I then pulled the boot over the the little cover. Looks good and does not move at all.
