All the info I have been receiving says January. Now, 2 fairly credible people on here say March. When the hell is it gonna be?? Come on now, it's mid-October and no freakin info from Mitsu.

there is always a time period of a couple of months for cars between debut & when production units hit local dealerships. first off, all the cars can't be built at once, and transportation & us customs takes a while too. my local dealership said they would get their first units sometime in march, with their first allotment starting then and lasting through much of the summer.

patience is a virtue

It'll be March. FYI, the specs for the Evo are now finalized. Media materials are being produced right now. I would look for more info to leak out in the next month. The embargo date for info is Jan. though..meaning that everyone with info is not allowed to reveal the details until then.

It's date is still sketchy here in Japan too. They are saying the later half Jan 03 but no exact date....I wouldn't be surprised if it's the week following the TOKYO Auto Salon which is the 17 thru 19...

Broeli, care to elaborate when you say the "embargo" date. My understanding of the definition of embargo is "A government order prohibiting the movement of merchant ships into or out of its ports". Are you telling me that the EVO will be soley built in Japan and they are prohibited by the government to ship until Jan??

In this case embargo means: prohibition or ban. Meaning the prohibition against official info being released. Here is a direct quote from : "The actual embargo date on official information stands at January 5th"

Yeah - for example, I go to a Subaru press event on the 28th of September, and they show us the STi S401, let us sit in it, take pictures, ask questions and give us a cd-rom of data. But we are told that under pain of dismemberment that we cannot actually release any of that information to the public till October 10th. That's an embargo.

Then Subaru puts up an official STi S401 site up on the 8th of October. That's called "bending us over and doing us senseless".

Cheers,

Paul "I'm not going to forget that one, Subaru PR" Hansen

shirokuma,
I have been listening to your advice, and I just want to say thank you for all your helpful input and for your time, I am not sure if you already have been asked this but, do they plan to do a showing of the new Evo like they did with the Sti S401 that you were just talking about? And if they havent done a showing like that, how can one judge the arrival date of the Evo based on the complete lack of information? Thanks again. -Daniel

Of course MMC will have a press unveiling - but they won't do it till much closer to the release date. Just like what happened with the Impreza facelift, somebody *will* spill the beans early.

How do we estimate a date so far ahead, then? Because there are sources of information - informal "off the record" conversations with Ralliart personnel and MMC personnel usually will give the press an idea of the rough date - but that won't be on paper, so no proof can be offered.

And the problem is that even when one has gotten ahold of rather strong information on such things, that doesn't preclude delays on the manufacturer's side that the manufacturer had no control over. Take a look at software release dates.

Cheers,

Paul Hansen

I used to work at a publication, and here is how it works. If the Embargo date is Jan 5, than the dealers know little more than you do. Basically what they have been told by their reps and at the Vegas dealer show. will keep information under wrap until this date. At or before this date they will hold what is called a "long lead press event". They take the writers somewhere fancy, wine & dine them and let them drive the car. The idea is get info to the press prior to the public. It's kind of a political move to grease the press and make sure they write nice things about the car. Not that this car will need much greasing. Also, the press get's pissed when the public gets info before they do. That's partly why Manufactures don't like the spy shots. Shortly after that the car will start arriving at stores. With any new release, the number will start small and increase from there, although I suspect the numbers will be low since I hear they are only planning to sell around 5000 in the first year. Keep the supply low and the demand high. So bottom line, most likely the first ones will arrive in Feb, and then more in March.
