the sad and scary truth about deposits....

Well, let me start by saying that I have 2 deposits in 2 dealers with 1'st pick in both. I work in a dealership myself (not mitsu) and I can tell you that we are all at the dealers will when it comes to actually receiving the cars. You see, a salesman is taught to be a liar (they actually go to classes so they know how to respond to any specific remark or question you may have). I work amongst them so I know them personally, and its the same everywhere. And the biggest dirtbags are the sales managers, I've seen more than 10 come and go and I can tell you that in order to keep their jobs they have to be ruthless.

Well, in order for you to have your car guaranteed you MUST have a printed VIN number of the vehicle. We must help eachother by informing on this site if anyone received a valid VIN. As of now noone I know has any VINS. An order contract or deposit slip without a VIN is of no use if you try and have a lawsuit against a dealer. They can pull out of a deal by simply saying that your particular car was never received "sorry!". And of course turn around and sell the car for thousands over sticker. Trust me, its been done to me by a fellow dealership and we've done it in my own dealership.
The bright side of this is that not all dealers are out to rape people, but beleive me that all EVOs will not come out of a given dealership at sticker. Any dealer will take a $5000 mark-up and screw the next guy. Be carefull and lets stay together on this matter and keep the lookout for VIN numbers, usuallly they will come out 2 or 3 months before actual delivery. GOOD LUCK!

Wrong.

You see, a salesman is taught to be a liar (they actually go to classes so they know how to respond to any specific remark or question you may have). I work amongst them so I know them personally, and its the same everywhere
You are wrong. I AM a salesman and yes I have been to classes where they taught me to sale, and I attend them regularly to keep myself sharp. They didn't teach me to lie, and as far as the part about responding to remarks and questions, its how we close deals. Its called overcoming objections:

Ex1 : A guy says to me, "Well I can't buy until my wife sees it."

I say, "Where is she? Would you like to ride over and see her at work?" -or "Would you like to borrow the vehicle for a couple of hours so that she can?"

Ex2 : (My favorite, because I hear it all the time.) "Well, this is the first place we've looked..."

I say, "what other vehicles are you considering?/What would I have to do make this the last place you go?"

There are hundreds more objectives people come up with to avoid the buying process, because they may or may not be comfortable when put on the spot, but that's are job, I'm sorry but get over it. We don't make money opening doors, passing out brochures and going on test drives. It's funny you say this, because some salesmen have a saying (myself not included) that goes "Buyers are liars." Do I believe everybody that comes in that says "We haven't been anywhere else, yet?" No. Human beings lie, or has in some time in their life, some more incidious then others. But by me overcoming objections to make a sale is part of the job. I narrow it down to this, "Other then the price or the figures, is there anything else that is stopping you from buying this vehicle now?" Whatever follows I do my best to overcome, but not with a lie. If I can't, if it is because of some legitimate reason, I hope that I have built enough rapport that they remember me, how well I've treated them, my knowledge of the vehicle and that they come back to me when they are ready. That's how a good salesperson does his job. Lies get you nowhere. People in it for the long run don't have to.

And secondly. A deposit is a deposit is a deposit and nothing more. If you thought you were making an actual sales contract then you were fooling yourself to begin with. You need to get something in writing before just dropping off the check. And you need to deal with a reputable dealer. My guess is you don't work at one, so you should know what to look for before you go putting your money in the hands of people whom you feel to be liars and theives.

Other than "What's it gonna take for you to drive this car home today", and "If I could would you" I think you've covered them all. Love to see your SSi scores.
