I took off mine after 1 month of owning my evo. Havent had any problems and it cools the engine from the bottom without it.

Why take it off? It's lightweight plastic. Unless you are going to be working on your car on a regular basis.

I also remember that the under tray has a benefit of directing air to cool things down such as the TC and the brake rotors. If you look at the tray, it has channels for directing air.

that undertray also has quite an effect on the downforce at the front end. you should notice quite a difference traveling at freeway speeds with it off. it also helps to cool the engine by forcing the air to only travel in one direction through the engine bay and exit either through the hood vent or the rear near the firewall. without it, there is quite a bit of turbulence underneat the engine.

ya i'd leave it on as it aids in cooling and downforce... its basicly a diffuser for the front... but daily driving i dont think youll have a problem... if ur track racing and heating things up i'd put it back on

if you want to change it somehow get a full front end splitter. it'll be one piece so you can easily take it off. plus it'll be very very good for aerodynamics.

I think it cools the engine down even better with it off...

The downpipe gets hit with a direct flow of air...but thats just me

Ill leave mine off..

Most modified evo's from Al's to sparco,to teins EVO leave it off....

Damn thing folded back under the car during a high speed run. I stopped, ripped it off and tossed it in the ditch on the side of the road.

hey is anyone else's cracked the hell up? i took a look at it the other day and there are just missing chunks all over the place. and i think it's the source of the rattling noises. it might be a bad idea to run with it off especially if your cam gear covers are off.

Plus all you guys in the snow belt, by keeping it on will keep you engine cleaner and free of salt splash from puddles. You have your starter right smack in the middle on the bottom.

Might wanna read this (page 4 or so, IIRC): http://www.mitsubishi-motors.co.jp/PDF-E/evo8.pdf

Then think long and hard about how you plan on using your car before you take it off. IMO, for drag racing, I'd take it off, since it will save you some weight. However, for driving on the street and racing it around a track, I'd definitely leave it on (both to keep the car clean and for the downforce/air-channeling). I also have not seen an aftermarket splitter that adequately replaces the front undertray. I've seen the APR splitter and was somewhat underwhelmed. Autovation's splitter looks good, but it leaves the stock undertray in place... I'm hoping that the one Vishnu is working on will be better, but only time will tell.
