Question Questions?? about driving car when still cold

After starting my car after it sits over night or after work is it normal for the motor to idle at 1200 - 1300 for about 2 or 3 min?

And is it normal for the car to stutter a little after shifting to second for the first time when driving while the motor is cold?

yes. It'll go up to that RPM until the engine warms up. If you sit there and look at the RPM, as the TEMP goes up, the RPM will fall.

and yes, it'll stutter a lot when it's cold. That's with all the cars, but especially the Turbo cars.

Shouldnt yu always warm it up a few min before yu get going just b/c its a turbo car? Some cars like my GTI is not good to sit and idle but instead should just drive slowly untill it warms up.

I usually sit in my Evo for 30 seconds, and drive around while shifting at, or under 3,000rpms till the engine warms up.

I do the same for my MR2 Turbo also.

After? I feel when its cold, the whole characteristic of the car is different. The clutch doesnt grab like it normally does, etc. This never happened to me, until around 8000 miles. I believe its more so a worn clutch, but aftermarket clutches are known to do this as well.

Sometimes my whole front shakes when i shift into first, talk about making you paranoid or pissed/nervous... ive never had the problem you descibed in any gear, but first.

mitsu engineering is NOT cheap, but their warranties are...

I heard that most mitsus will idle higher for a min or two...

its just between first and second for the first time there is a slight delay or "stutter" when the motor is cold.

yes it is very important to warm the car up befor driving, especially before boosting.. the evo's stock internals are forged and they need to expand before being pushed... they will heat up and expand to normal opperating tollerances as the vehicle heats up... this is where the whole piston slap termonaligy comes into play.. the pistons cold are smaller then they should be and there is a greater chance for blow by around the rings.. after the motor is warm these areas will expand and close up...

DO NOT boost on a cold engine....

forged metal expands? I thought that's why they make it forged, since it bypasses that property of all metals to expand and contract?
