Those of you with 300-400 WHP mods, question for you

I am considering the purchase of an '05 Evo or MR. I have a history of modding the heck out of my cars so I would expect to do the same with the Evo.

One of my biggest regrets is spending $5-7k on mods to wind up with a car that doesn't idle well, has trouble starting, smokes a lot, or just has much less driveability and reliability than stock.

I know the 2.0 Mitsu engine is almost bulletproof so I am not worried too much about that, but how do these mod levels effect the overall driveability?

What would be the best package (well sorted reliable package) that would get me to the 320-350 WHP range with the most "stock-like" driveability? I don't mind bringing it to a tuner and having the whole thing done if there is a proven package out there. Thanks for your advice.

Dan

Get the MR. put an AEM EMS on it...an intake, exaust, cams, and boost controller

that should make the power you're looking for and the EMS will keep the car idle like stock and drivability like stock as well

oh yeah, you will probably need a clutch down the road too...possibly sooner than you think

Thanks for the advice. Just curious...why are you guys recommending the MR? Just for the weight savings and 6 speed? Seems that the Standard Evo for '05 is the better value if it is in fact $3-4k less MSRP and you can buy them for invoice which would make it more like $6-7k under the MR.

I'll look into the AEM packages. Do those packages have the best power/driveability consensus on the board?

Thanks,

Dan

I second that. Depending on what you want. No need for the MR if you dont want to spend the extra money. You can take the money you save and throw it into your mods. Anyway, Boost Controller, AEM EMS, Downpipe, Highflow Cat or Cat Delete Pipe, Catback Exhaust, Clutch, Cams should put you well over were you want to be. Only reason i say cams is to get some more top end out of your monster but they are not a must. Just my 0.02

If you want the most driveability possible, all you have to do is use less aggressive parts. There are quiet exhausts out there that mkae 90% of the power of the extremely loud ones. Mild cams like the HKS 264 also make a lot of power. All you need for 350 whp is a full turboback exhaust, cams, a decent intake, boost controller, and a way to tune it all. On pump gas you should pull 330 whp and on race gas atleast 350 whp.

To get to 320-350 WHP you’ll need cams, boost control, fuel control, injectors, fuel pump, exhaust, and intake mods. Sorry, but because of these mods you’ll have rough idle, and it’ll take a little bit longer to start. Some will say this is not true but believe me that you’ll notice, even though it might be a small difference.

Driveability is very subjective. So I’m not going to go there.

I’m not sure what you mean by reliable:
- if you mean not having to tweak the car every once in a while, well, you’re going to be doing a lot of that
- if you mean parts failing, that truly depends on what parts you use and how you install them or have them installed

Any properly modified car should only smoke very little. I work with race cars; any well-prepared car does not smoke a lot if at all. If you’re talking about black soot around the tailpipe well I got that even when my Evo was brand-new.

I’d buy and mod (and am doing that now, my goal is 400WHP), but that’s me. Getting any car modified and driving the way you want takes time and research… you can’t just throw money at it and bolt-on mods like a lot of people like to do.

Just call Vishnu. Talk to Shiv. problem solved.

I can tell you one thing. Dont waste any $$$ on an intake. There is a huge debate over which fuel management system is best. I tend to lean toward the Exede from Vishnu, but my reasons are complicated. It seems using the 272 intake and 264 exhaust cams (no thats not backwards) solves the rough idle problem. And you WILL need a clutch much sooner than you think!

Happy Modding!

i have a true 350 whp and almost 400 on race gas and its a daily driver and i've never had a problem. but if i were you i wouldnt get the mr unless you are gonna leave it alone. in my opinon its not worth the extra cash when you could by other mods with that money.

but thats my 2 cents
